Job Description

Minimum qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate, equivalent degree, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Admitted to the bar and in good standing or otherwise authorized to practice law in the state of hire.
  • 5 years of attorney-level experience in a law firm or in house legal department.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience in a law firm or in-house legal department of a technology company.
  • Experience providing legal agreement support for technology transactions, or advising science and engineering teams on structuring IP and commercial deal terms.
  • Ability to be flexible in an environment with limited direction, balance competing priorities, and manage several time-sensitive projects at once.
  • Excellent organizational skills, and the ability to manage requests and take on artificial intelligence legal issues.

As an Associate Commercial Counsel for AI Research, you will work with business development and product teams that are dedicated to using technologies to improve people’s lives and advance the field of artificial intelligence. You will be responsible for a mixed portfolio of work and advise on a wide range of contractual and IP-related issues relating to Google’s partnerships.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $189,000-$290,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Review, draft, and discuss a variety of commercial agreements, such as licenses and intellectual property agreements, master sponsored research agreements, and other collaborative agreements with academic institutions, governments, and industry partners.
  • Manage agreements that comply with company policies and risk tolerance.
  • Develop and maintain legal resources that are required for industry specific customers and partners, as well as trainings for internal teams.
  • Serve as a trusted partner, and provide strategic, actionable guidance and advice, to business customers and cross-functional stakeholders on legal issues and risks, approval processes, company policies and procedures, intellectual property (IP), and business strategy.
  • Respond promptly to legal requests from the business team and other clients, including at the executive level, summarizing, and communicating legal concepts for business audiences.
