About the job

Like Google's own ambitions, the work of a Software Engineer (SWE) goes way beyond just Search. SWE Managers have not only the technical expertise to take on and provide technical leadership to major projects, but also manage a team of engineers. You not only optimize your own code but make sure engineers are able to optimize theirs. As a SWE Manager you manage your project goals, contribute to product strategy and help develop your team. SWE teams work all across the company, in areas such as information retrieval, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking, security, data compression, user interface design; the list goes on and is growing every day. Operating with scale and speed, our exceptional software engineers are just getting started -- and as a manager, you guide the way.

As Natural Language Processing (NLP) technologies continue to evolve, data has become one of the driving forces behind fundamental NLP improvements and innovation.

The team is responsible for delivering high-quality data to improve Google Assistant's ability to understand our users and help them in deeper and more impactful ways. We work closely with linguists and Machine Learning teams to improve and expand Google Assistant understanding.

In this role, you will fundamentally improve Google Assistant's NLP systems. You'll lead two key areas in our data initiatives, and you'll have opportunities for both technical and thought leadership while working in a fast-paced, fun environment.

Responsibilities

  • Generate and augment synthetic data.
  • Develop multi-layered capabilities to increase data quality at scale and create metrics and dashboards for assessing Google Assistant understanding.
  • Build data pipelines to support the transformation from raw query to fully annotated training/evaluation example at Google scale.
  • Mine for valuable training and evaluation query sets.
  • Build tools and UIs for query annotation.
