About the job

Cross-Disciplinary Application-Guided Machine Learning (CAML) is a team in Research that picks difficult application areas that require fundamental cross-disciplinary innovation at the core.

We collaborate with researchers from multiple Machine Learning (ML) disciplines to take product concepts from idea to execution initially as Google Research initiatives, while building transformative ML-powered products by staffing diverse teams that take a user-centric approach to rapidly iterate with users and partners. Our goal is to deliver impact through products by delivering step-function product functionality that’s aligned with their long-term strategy.

We bring together technology and expertise to solve hard, foundational ML problems. Advances in ML directly benefit the specific products we work on, but the biggest impact comes from accelerating the development of foundational ML technologies that will benefit a much wider range of products at Google.

CAML has a portfolio of projects that span a number of different domains including language learning, fitness, virtual worlds, weather, and physics simulation.

Google Research addresses challenges that define the technology of today and tomorrow. From conducting fundamental research to influencing product development, our research teams have the opportunity to impact technology used by billions of people every day.

Our teams aspire to make discoveries that impact everyone, and core to our approach is sharing our research and tools to fuel progress in the field -- we publish regularly in academic journals, release projects as open source, and apply research to Google products.

Responsibilities

  • Define, evolve, and help drive forward CAML’s innovation model.
  • Set and guide the product strategy/execution for the various projects within the CAML portfolio, taking ideas from concept to production.
  • Manage the CAML portfolio to launch projects, ramp down projects, and allocate resources to maximize overall impact.
  • Mentor and manage a cross-functional team of product managers, UX designers, and UX researchers.
  • Build relationships and collaborate with key stakeholders across the Research organization and products. Establish connectivity across relatively independent projects in the portfolio.
