Job Description

Amazon Web Services is looking for a Principal Applied Scientist to join the Proactive Security group within AWS Security. You will work with scientists, security experts, and software developers on a team dedicated to tools that detect security bugs and verify security best practices. You will build prototypes and explore conceptually new solutions. We work within an organization that is responsible for the security of all of the services offered by AWS, including EC2, S3, and Lambda. This is a high visibility team that solves security challenges at a massive scale. We work closely with other teams in AWS including CodeGuru, Identity, Security Operations, and the Automated Reasoning Groups. Your tools and techniques will be be a critical part of AWS’s security efforts, and they will be used by virtually all engineers in AWS.

Key job responsibilities

  • Improve and accelerate our ability to use automation to solve security problems by identifying and extending advanced techniques.
  • Contribute to a multi-year vision for researching and applying techniques to keep AWS systems secure.
  • Work with stakeholders in AWS development teams and AWS Security to understand what problems will benefit from techniques emerging from scientific research.
  • Partner with engineering, security and other science teams building relevant technology that will benefit AWS Security.
  • Maintain an understanding of industry and technology trends in security and automated reasoning research.
  • Contribute to Amazon's Intellectual Property through patents and/or external publications.
  • Understand business context to decisions made within and across groups.
  • Effectively communicate with senior management, colleagues, the open source community, and academia.
  • Recognize and help hire top talent in your field.
  • Mentor others in achieving their career growth potential.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • PhD degree or comparable research experience in computer science or mathematics.
  • 8+ years of experience in the field.
  • Experience with program analysis and fast prototyping
  • Experience working with software engineering teams

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong publication record at top conferences and journals
