The Research Scientist for Workforce Strategy and Planning will be responsible for the science behind all products, programs, and metrics related to workforce planning and key strategic initiatives across AWS Dedicated Cloud Solutions (DCS).

The person will come up with innovative ways to use econometrics, machine learning, and economic theory to improve the experience of AWS employees and to help the organization accelerate AWS’s growth. We are looking for an experienced researcher to design and execute analyses which will include the sourcing, defining and leveling around complex and varied business problems. We seek a creative thinker who has a desire to execute and deliver on big ideas.

This role may be based out of any US Global AWS Office including (but not limited to): Dallas, Austin, Chicago, Seattle, Atlanta, Boston, New York, San Francisco, San Diego, Tempe, Pittsburgh, Charlotte, Charleston, Salt Lake City, Nashville, Minneapolis, Detroit

Key job responsibilities

  • Identify and work with external and internal talent datasets and develop ways to combine the two to answer important talent research questions
  • Work with AWS HR scientists and leadership to develop research roadmap
  • Identify and pitch new opportunities to leadership that are suggested by the data
  • Suggest experiments and mechanisms to quantify the impact of policy changes on talent movement
  • Build state of the art models to predict employee headcount and movements across all Amazon businesses
  • Build models to understand drivers of promotion, attrition, transfers, and hires

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Masters Degree in Economics, Statistics, Finance, Machine Learning, or Operations Research
  • 5+ years of experience in consulting or private sector
  • Experience in the development and execution of products from concept, prototype to production all while incorporating feedback from customers, scientists, and business leaders
  • Experience writing technical white papers and business-facing documents to clearly explain complex technical concepts to audiences with diverse business/scientific backgrounds

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • PhD in Economics, Statistics, Finance, Machine Learning, or Operations Research
  • Strong research track record.
  • Strong background in econometrics (e.g., forecasting, time series, panel data, program evaluation, and/or high dimensional problems), probability and statistics, economic theory, and quantitative methods
  • Demonstrated superior analytical skills
  • Ability to identify and solve ambiguous problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate both strategically and tactically in a high-energy, fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and collaboration skills that enable you to earn trust at all levels
  • High degree of organization and ability to manage multiple, competing priorities.
  • Experience hiring and leading experienced scientists and a successful record of developing junior members from academia/industry to a successful career track
  • Ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary science team of Data Scientists, Economists, BIE, Applied Scientists, Software Engineers and Data Engineers
  • Meets/exceeds Amazon’s leadership principles requirements for this role
  • Meets/exceeds Amazon’s functional/technical depth and complexity for this role
