Job Description

The AWS People Analytics is looking for a Data Science Manager that is comfortable leading a team of Data Scientist all while being well-versed in quantitative methods, including classical statistics and machine learning approaches.

You will be comfortable combing through computational models, analyzing large scale candidate/associate data and be strategic to provide insights that improve the employee experience within the AWS organization. The Data Science Manager will play an active role in translating business and functional requirements into concrete deliverables and working closely with the product and engineering teams to deploy solutions into production.

You will have the opportunity to work on employee retention and forecasting problems and will build a team that conducts research, experiments, prototyping, and deploys models to production to drive business value. As the single-threaded Science leader on the team – you will hire, coach, and lead your team of data scientists to develop innovative models that surface actionable insights.

Key job responsibilities

  • Build at-scale high performing predictive and prescriptive models and algorithms to personalize the candidate hiring experience.
  • Provide Next-Best-Actions (NBAs) to HR Partners and People Managers to improve employee experience.
  • Define, create and invent metrics and Key Performance Identifiers (KPIs) to measure the impact of HR decisions on employee experience including engagement, attrition and growth.
  • Server as a subject matter expert for design and implementation of high performing algorithms, provide guidance on programmatic integration of candidate insights into labor planning and staffing systems.
  • Hire, mentor and lead a team of talented Science professionals (PhD and/or MS in Statistics, AI or Machine Learning)
  • Work collaboratively and effectively with engineering and business partners to build algorithms and models for hiring funnel forecasting and optimization.
  • Develop mechanisms to audit the forecast quality and develop best practices.
  • Apply business judgement to identify opportunities and establish a Science vision for the team, iteratively delivering on the science roadmap in partnership with product and engineering stakeholders.
  • Communicate scientific solution and insights effectively to a non-scientific audience.

The AWS People Analytics organization is a critical piece of the AWS business flywheel. We are the curators of people data for the industry leaders in cloud computing and are responsible for providing the right metrics and insights to help the business develop its employees and scale its workforce. With AWS being a pioneer in the cloud computing industry, we get to answer challenging questions that have never been encountered before. The work we do enables leaders to make industry-shaking decisions based upon insights we must generate. We also have a great responsibility to treat this data as sacred and be best in class with our data security principles.

This role can be based within 100 miles of any US AWS Corporate location (i.e. Seattle, WA, Arlington, VA, Herndon, VA, New York, NY, Boston, MA, Chicago, IL, Dallas, TX, Austin, TX, Cupertino, CA, Palo Alto, CA, etc).

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • MS in data science, applied mathematics, economics, operational research, statistics, engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • 5+ years hands-on experience in customer facing production model development, model validation, and model implementation for large-scale applications.
  • 3+ years experience in managing, mentoring and leading a technical development team including data scientists, applied scientists, and machine learning engineers.
  • Proficiency programming in Python, R, Java, C#, C++ or other similar programming languages.
  • Ability to convey mathematical results to non-science stakeholders.
  • Strong communication and data presentation skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A PhD in a quantitative field (Computer Science, Mathematics, Machine Learning, AI, Statistics, or equivalent)
  • 10+ years of experience working in data science in a consumer product company
  • 5+ years of experience managing data scientists or similar roles.
  • Ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team of Data Scientists, BIEs, Data Engineers, and Product Managers.
  • Experience with AWS technologies like Redshift, S3, Sagemaker, EC2, Data Pipeline, & EMR.


The total pay range for this position in Colorado is $342K - $467K yearly, however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. A sign-on bonus and restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
