Job Description

The AI Data Team in Amazon Web Services (AWS) is looking for a Language Engineer ready to dive deep and think big about developing solutions for natural language data collections. This position is an opportunity to apply your expertise in a challenging but supportive environment. The position may be remote, with a preference for Santa Clara, Seattle, or New York City. We work in distributed teams, and strengthen our connections by traveling approximately five days per quarter for in person meetings.

As a Language Engineer, you will start by learning the full context of a critical project for Comprehend natural language processing (NLP) services. You will consult with stakeholders in science, engineering, and product teams to understand the role data plays in developing models that meet customer needs. You will collaborate to develop and implement the data collection and annotation strategy, with a focus on iterative analysis, quality, and efficiency. You will use your hands-on data analytics skills and knowledge of machine learning (ML) techniques when collaborating with scientists to ensure that datasets are optimized for model performance.

You will then expand your scope to additional projects. You will collaborate with other members of the AI Data Team to identify opportunities for innovation and process improvement. You will stay up to date in the field of data-centric AI, contributing to experiments with new techniques in data collection and annotation.

Key job responsibilities

• Manage and process large amounts of linguistic data
• Develop best practices for data collection and data annotation
• Design quality control metrics and methodology for data collection and data annotation
• Develop scripts and tools to automate data processing and handling
• Collaborate with colleagues across disciplines to define metrics, guidelines, and workflows

Use existing language processing tools to bootstrap and process data

The mission of the AI Data Team is to engineer the datasets critical to the success of AWS’s machine learning services. From chatbots to subtitles to search results and beyond, these products support dozens of languages and impact millions of people every day. We are a group of language engineers, linguists, data scientists, data engineers, and program managers, and we partner closely with the science, engineering, and product teams. We are customer obsessed and committed to delivering results with the highest quality and integrity.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

• PhD in Computational Linguistics, Linguistics with a computational component, or an equivalent field; alternatively, MA with 3+ years of experience
• 2 years of experience with natural language data collection, labelling and other forms of data markup
• Excellent knowledge of syntax, semantics, and pragmatics
• Proficiency in scripting and analytics tools, including Python
• Experience building ontologies, taxonomies, and other semantic relation frameworks
• Experience owning and executing language data collection and annotation projects with data quality assessments

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Advanced proficiency in Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, Mandarin, Korean or another language
• Ability to explain complex concepts and solutions in easy-to-understand terms
• Practical knowledge of version control systems such as GitHub
• Experience working with multiple languages and low-resource languages

The pay range for this position in Colorado is $103,400 -$121,000 (yr); however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. A sign-on bonus and restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
