Job Description

Job summary

The AWS Forecasting team is hiring a Business Intelligence Engineer to improve the scalability and customer experience for customers (internal AWS service teams) using our team’s products. Our team is responsible for growing the world's largest Cloud at the most cost-efficient rate - striving to find the optimum tradeoff between AWS service availability and fleet utilization, where a 1% improvement to utilization means millions in additional free cash flow. We own the development of methods and tools used by service owners and finance partners to monitor, forecast, and plan service usage, infrastructure, and revenue. Our systems help business owners evaluate and make decisions about their service forecasts relative to their availability, utilization, revenue, and cost plans and goals. Our forecast and other demand signal outputs are used by downstream infrastructure supply chain and build organizations to drive server, network, and data center investments.

If you have a passion for improving visibility, increasing understanding, and motivating action for your customers resulting in high impact improvements in the business and operations, this is the perfect role for you. In this role, you will work directly with customers, including senior leaders, to understand their opportunities, provide insightful analyses, and build repeatable reporting processes. Your work will prevent capacity shortfalls for AWS customers, while simultaneously reducing waste to save millions of dollars. This role will focus on the challenges involved with launching a new AWS region, specifically finding efficiencies for EC2 and other services.

The primary responsibilities of this role include:

  • Write high quality optimized SQL to retrieve and analyze data from relational databases (ex. Redshift, MySQL, S3, RDS), using your understanding of AWS’s data resources and know how, when, and which sources to use and which not to use.
  • Work closely with Data Engineers and business users to design clean and scalable data sources required for analytics and reporting.
  • Create user–friendly, repeatable reporting solutions to minimize ad hoc customer requests, which creates team thrash and a poor customer experience.
  • Work directly with customers, including AWS Services and Finance, to understand the business problems at hand, propose impactful analyses and solutions, and ensure customers’ problems are solved and sustained.
  • Define and develop business-critical metrics, reports, key performance indicators, and financials across all forecasting products that are consumable by a wide range of functions and levels.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics or related field
  • 3+ years analyzing data to solve business problems and presenting impactful insights to business teams
  • Experience in SQL
  • Experience with BI data visualization and delivery tools such as Tableau, Quicksight, etc.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in Business, Engineering, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics or related field
  • Understanding of data warehousing and data modeling
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills, and an ability to effectively communicate with both business and technical teams
  • Proven problem solving skills, project management skills, attention to detail, and exceptional organizational skills
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and competing objectives in a fast paced environment
