Job summary
Amazon Web Services is looking for a Senior Applied Scientist Manager to join the Proactive Security group within AWS Security. You will work with scientists, security experts, and software developers on a team dedicated to tools that detect security bugs and verify security best practices. You will build prototypes and explore conceptually new solutions. We work within an organization that is responsible for the security of all of the services offered by AWS, including EC2, S3, and Lambda. This is a high visibility team that solves security challenges at a massive scale. We work closely with other teams in AWS including CodeGuru, Identity, the Automated Reasoning Groups, and our internal security review and incident response teams. Your tools and techniques will be be a critical part of AWS’s security efforts, and they will be used by virtually all engineers in AWS.

Key job responsibilities

  • Define and drive a multi-year vision for researching and applying techniques to keep AWS systems secure.
  • Work with stakeholders in AWS development teams and AWS Security to understand what problems will benefit from techniques emerging from scientific research.
  • Maintain an understanding of industry and technology trends in relevant areas of research.
  • Contribute to Amazon's Intellectual Property through patents and/or external publications.
  • Partner with engineering, security and other science teams building relevant technology that will benefit AWS Security.
  • Effectively communicate with senior management, colleagues, the open source community, and academia.
  • Foster a culture of transparency, ownership and operational excellence among your teams.
  • Provide a work environment that allows employees to have fun and advance in their careers.

  • Mentor others in achieving their career growth potential.

  • Meet with people in your org to understand their work and remove any roadblocks.
  • Investigate security events to understand opportunities for applying science to solve security problems at scale.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders to ensure your tools fit with the larger needs of AWS.
  • Learn about new research being performed in Amazon and beyond that your team can build on.

About the team
You will lead a team of scientists with expertise in formal methods, software analysis, and security.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • PhD degree or comparable research experience in computer science or mathematics.
  • 10+ years of experience in the field.
  • Experience leading a team of scientists

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Expertise in a field that studies automatic approaches to software, such as static code analysis, computer-aided verification, formal methods, dynamic program analysis, or fuzzing.
  • Strong publication record at top conferences and journals.
  • Understanding of security issues.
  • Track record of applying science to solve problems in industry.
