Job summary

The Decision Science team is looking for an analytical, innovative, hands-on and customer-obsessed Senior Manager of Data Science to help set and apply economic analyses for business problems while operating in a fast and dynamic business environment. This critical leader will own end-to-end analyses - including for early stage, not launched products - for several established and emerging product lines in the Amazon Devices portfolio, and identify and ideate on solutions to deeply understand the business problems and guide solutions. This leader will develop scientists to deeply understand business problems and apply their expertise and judgment to advance business decisions.

Key job responsibilities

  • Create analyses and insights focused on incrementality and cannibalization for products prior to launch, including demand estimation, marketing sizing, and pricing recommendations
  • Lead and provide coaching to a team of Data Scientists, Economists and Product Managers
  • Partner with Engineering, Product and Machine Learning leaders to develop data-driven business strategy.
  • Own the the experimentation cycle: idea, design, prototype, and impact assessment
  • Scale analytics and insights offerings to multiple products
  • Be the voice of the customer across products and determine trends vs. outliers

About the team

The Decision Science team is a group within Device Economics that supports Amazon Devices and Services. The Devices and Services teams build hardware and software ranging from Kindle Paperwhite to Blink Video Camera subscriptions to FireTV to the Astro robot. Within Decision Science, we own demand estimates and pricing recommendations of concept devices before customers know they exist - but critical decisions need to be made such as (1) whether to invest or not, (2) how to price the products, and (3) how many production lines to build with how much inventory, etc. We are a cross-functional consulting team working to support these high impact decisions at the most senior levels of leadership.

In addition to the primary job location, we are open to considering locations near major Amazon hubs including but not limited to Arlington VA (HQ2 near DC), Austin TX, Boston MA, Denver CO, Los Angeles CA, Seattle/Bellevue WA, San Diego CA, Toronto Canada, and Vancouver Canada.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • MS degree in Business, Economics, Statistics, Data Science, Data Mining, or other quantitative field
  • 8+ years of experience in Analytics, Data Science or other quantitative disciplines and a degree in statistics, economics, mathematics, or similar quantitative discipline
  • 2+ years of analytical people management experience
  • Demonstrated experience developing successful analytics-based solutions to business problems
  • Familiarity with probability, probability distributions, statistical modeling (e.g. gradient-boosted regression, logistic regression), and causal inference
  • Experience with data scripting languages (e.g. SQL, Python) or statistical/mathematical software (e.g. R, SAS, or Matlab)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Expertise in estimation, experimental design, hypothesis and A/B testing
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and with others with diverse skill sets
  • Experience with writing academic-styled papers for presenting both the methodologies used and results for data science projects
  • Ph.D. in Science, Engineering, Economics, Statistics or other quantitative fields
