As a Senior BI Engineer/BI Developer at Octo, you will support a Data and Analytics effort within the Department of Veterans Affairs. This role will support data and analytics efforts that will help lead strategic and tactical business decisions. The Business Intelligence Engineer will be expected to work in an Agile framework to develop dashboards and reports leveraging disparate data sources across the VA enterprise. This role will develop analysis plans, create and clean analytical data sets, create ad-hoc or standard data reports and dashboards, create and modify complex reports, and develop data visualizations. The Business Intelligence Developer will collaborate with colleagues and executive leadership to ideate, execute and productionalize business intelligence solutions. Prefer experience building dashboards using health, healthcare or clinical data and data sets.

Program Mission…

This program within the Department of Veterans Affairs will provide a data science and analytical team capable of: developing data products for joint VA and DoD enterprise requirements, employing advanced analytical approaches across federated and classical machine learning, partnering with stakeholders to validate findings, and establish an MLOps pipeline for efficient model deployment; and better align the need for gaining valuable clinical insights with VHA and DHA operational data.

Responsibilities…

  • Be part of an innovative team responsible for establishing data science and analytical pathways to deliver operational value through clinical insights and population health management capabilities.
  • Work directly with our software development team to ensure that we are creating best-in-class solutions to solve our customers’ complex data challenges.
  • Gather business intelligence requirements from stakeholders and translate them into a meaningful BI products.
  • Develop understanding of data sources available and their use cases in business intelligence and reporting
  • Design and implement required reports/dashboards, which includes ad-hoc and standard reports/dashboards
  • Generate dashboards with quick/context/global filters, parameters and calculated fields
  • Collaborate with multiple teams and clients to understand and recommend activities related to business intelligence
  • Define best practices for BI product development
  • Collaborate with other VA and DoD stakeholders along with other key stakeholders (Federal and non-Federal) to validate finding and approach.
  • Work with a data analytics team to develop a data strategy and phased implementation plan to address the full scope of Veteran and Clinician experience and related operational data sources.
  • Work with a data analytics team to execute the implementation plan to achieve data strategy objectives by expanding the scope of data provided, incorporating additional metrics and drivers, and implementing mechanisms to incorporate use of key insights into operational decision processes.

Years of Experience: 6+ years of recent related experience. Prefer experience working with healthcare and/or clinical data sets.

Education: B.S. in a quantitative field such as Computer Science, Statistics, or Mathematics OR 8 years of additional experience will be considered in lieu of degree.

Location: Remote within the United States. Must have reliable internet service that allows for effective telecommuting.

Clearance: Must be able to obtain a public trust clearance. Must be eligible to work in the United States.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Experience and educational requirements below.
  • Knowledge of modern BI tools such as PowerBI.
  • Proficiency in Azure Data Lake Storage, Trifacta, Collibra, R, Python, SQL, Databricks Knowledge of Powerapps, Power Automate, MS Forms.
  • Dashboard and advanced visualization development and reporting capabilities.
  • Excellent ability to communicate concisely and effectively with executive leadership and technical teams.
  • Clearance: Must be able to obtain a public trust clearance. Must be eligible to work in the United States.

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Experience supporting Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and/or other federal organizations.
  • Experience working with Federated Data models.
  • Familiar with VA data, OMOP Data Model, DoD Health Data.
