Job Description

We’re looking for someone who can build a system that would generate realistic human speech audio clips for use in measuring and evaluating the effectiveness of Apple’s speech recognition systems in Siri. A large, labeled dataset of human voice already exists. The idea is to create an ML model that takes text as input, then generates audio clips of synthetic human voice uttering that text. The ability to mimic regional accents and many spoken languages is ideal, but the system may be limited to US English in its first iteration.

Key Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional work experience developing systems for text to speech, speech synthesis, and natural language understanding
• Strong background in Deep Learning and classical Machine Learning, including but not limited to CNN/RNN architectures, GAN, active learning, k-shot learning and model complexity reduction techniques.
• Track record of coming up with new ML ideas, as shown by publications, patents or open-source projects
• Experience with one or more Deep Learning packages including but not limited to TensorFlow and PyTorch
• Experience with signal processing
• Proficiency in Python programming

You will contribute to advanced algorithms that will synthesize realistic human speech of many dialects and languages from text inputs. You will work on highly impactful deep learning problems that will help improve our users' experience, which has always been at the core of Apple's agenda.

More specifically, you will:

• Use a combination of data science and unsupervised learning techniques to explore and understand the nature of human speech dialects.
• Deploy Apple's massive computing platform with thousands of GPU's and CPU's to establish scalable, efficient, automated processes for large-scale data analyses, model development and model validation.
• Design state-of-the-art deep learning models for synthesizing speech from available labeled training datasets.
• Join a thriving Machine Learning community at Apple.
• Work cross-functionally with software engineers to build the next generation of speech synthesis systems.

Education & Experience

• Ph.D. degree in CS (preferred) with 3 years of experience, or other STEM fields such as EE, or Statistics.

Additional Requirements

• Experience with audio or video processing and/or audio or video synthesis
• Experience with Natural Language Processing (NLP) or Natural Language Understanding (NLU)
• Familiarity with C++ or Objective-C programming
• Experience processing large-scale data sets using Mesos, Spark, or Hadoop
• Past experience in creating high-performance implementations of deep learning algorithms

Pay & Benefits

At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $115,000 and $217,500, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
