The AI Frameworks team at Microsoft develops Artificial Intelligence (AI) software that enables running AI models everywhere, from world’s fastest AI supercomputers, to servers, desktops, mobile phones, IoT devices, and internet browsers. We collaborate with our hardware teams and hardware partners to build the software stacks for novel AI accelerators. We work closely with Microsoft Research (MSR) researchers and developers to optimize and scale out model training and inference. 

The team operates at the intersection of AI algorithmic innovation, purpose-built AI hardware, systems, and software. We are a cross-discipline team of highly capable and motivated people with a collaborative and inclusive culture. We collaborate with and contribute to the open-source community.

The Research Intern will be part of a passionate team building a deep learning framework for training and inference that can scale on very large Machine Learning (ML) models, leveraging custom AI accelerators, and the latest state-of-the-art deep learning techniques and algorithms. We use open source technologies and Github for our work and collaborate with the AI community at large.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a M.S. or PhD program in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related STEM field.
• Have at least 1 year of experience in conducting research, writing peer-reviewed publications and software development.
• Have at least 1 year of experience with software projects involving python and/or C/C++

Other Requirements

• Research Interns are expected to be physically located in their manager’s Microsoft worksite location for the duration of their internship.
• In addition to the qualifications above, you’ll need to submit a minimum of two reference letters for this position. After you submit your application, a request for letters may be sent to your list of references on your behalf. Note that reference letters cannot be requested until after you have submitted your application, and furthermore, that they might not be automatically requested for all candidates. You may wish to alert your letter writers in advance, so they will be ready to submit your letter.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of Large Language Models
• Knowledge in optimization and parallel computing
• Knowledge in optimizations and parallelism of AI workloads
• Ability to handle complex problems related to algorithms, software and hardware stack
• Able to collaborate effectively with your mentor and others in the group

The base pay range for this internship is - Applied Sciences IC2 : USD $5,090 -$10,120 per month. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, with the San Francisco Bay area and New York City Metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $6,690 -$11,030 per month.

The base pay range for this internship is- Applied Sciences IC3 : USD $6,290 -$12,170 per month. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $8,060 - $13, 240 per month.

Responsibilities

Research Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, Research Interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Research Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, Research Interns are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other Research Interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.
