Microsoft Research is seeking a highly motivated and skilled research intern to join our team, focusing on the integration of models for structured probabilistic reasoning with generative AI.

Despite the recent gains of cutting-edge generative AI, both empirical and theoretical results indicate these models cannot learn the structure of higher-level reasoning processes (what some call world models) from training data alone. In contrast, Bayesian and probabilistic machine learning tools have demonstrated the ability to represent these reasoning processes. However, these tools lack the power and general flexibility of Large Language Models (LLMs). In this Research Internship, we seek to explore ways of exploring the best of both worlds. Our current project aims to advance the field of AI by embedding generative AI primitives into state-of-the-art probabilistic programming approaches. We believe this could be a key step toward developing more human-like AI.

We are especially interested in those interested in causal reasoning and representation learning, Bayesian concept learning & Bayesian program induction, and advanced deep probabilistic inference techniques.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a PhD program,
• OR a research master’s degree program with the intention of completing a PhD, in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or a related STEM field.

• Research Interns are expected to be physically located in their manager’s Microsoft worksite location for the duration of their internship.
• In addition to the qualifications above, you’ll need to submit a minimum of two reference letters for this position. Note that reference letters cannot be requested until after you have submitted your application, and furthermore, that they might not be automatically requested for all candidates. You may wish to alert your letter writers in advance, so they will be ready to submit your letter.

Preferred Qualifications

• Familiarity with either causal inference or probabilistic/Bayesian machine learning.
• Proficiency in PyTorch or a related Python library.
• Experience with large language models and their application in AI.
• Familiarity with probablistic programming tools such as Pyro and Chi-Rho.
• Familiarity with challenges of representation learning.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and work effectively in a team.
• Proficient problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.

The base pay range for this internship is: Applied Sciences IC2 : USD $5,090 -$10,120 per month. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, with the San Francisco Bay area and New York City Metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $6,690 -$11,030 per month.

There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $8,060 - $13, 240 per month.

Responsibilities

Research Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, Research Interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Research Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, Research Interns are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other Research Interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research Internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though typically begin in the summer.
