The Cloud+AI product group builds and operates Microsoft’s Azure Cloud Computing platform (servers, storage, networking, databases, and application services) and Artificial Intelligence services (tools and higher-level services around perception, knowledge, and cognition). This ever-growing collection of capabilities enables organizations worldwide to build, test, deploy, and operate intelligent applications via a global network of Microsoft-managed datacenters.

The Microsoft Cloud Data Sciences (MCDS) team fosters a data-driven culture throughout Cloud+AI by encouraging and enabling the entire organization to make more informed decisions through data. It is one of the largest data science teams within Microsoft. In support of this mission, our Business Planning & Operations (BPO) teamhouston enables MCDS to do its best data science work by overseeing business strategy, objectives, key results, and knowledge management.

We're looking for an experienced data science storyteller to join our growing organization in a highly visible role! This person has deep experience driving for results in a timely way by producing effective and compelling information-rich data visualizations and by employing a solid command of spoken and written English with an effervescent, snappy writing style. The person we have in mind has a demonstrated ability to write about and illustrate data science work clearly and lucidly in both words and pictures in ways that bring them to life for business decision-makers, customers, partners, influencers, students, prospective employees, and other data scientists both inside and outside Microsoft. This person also has strong collaboration skills and leverages them to form working relationships throughout the organization at all levels in ways that accelerate business impact.

Responsibilities

The person in this role will

Produce special-purpose data visualizations and data science presentations as requested in a timely way on key topics, typically for presentation at an executive or senior leadership level, in ways that influence for impact.
Be the managing editor of our public-facing Data Science at Microsoft (DS@M) online publication, sourcing, writing, editing, and publishing articles on a weekly basis from Microsoft data scientists on how Microsoft employs data science to improve products and services. In addition to editing articles submitted by other data scientists, the role involves writing articles as needed, as well as maintaining the DS@M metrics dashboard and improving article performance via SEO. Develop and maintain data visualization and information design standards in consultation with a council representing relevant teams in our organization in ways that make a difference for our data scientists and make an impact with our stakeholders by being consistent with and supporting our internal MCDS team branding.
Manage and maintain our organization's walking deck, which is our ready-made source of material about our team for use in internal presentations, so that it is up to date and ready for use at all times by all members of our organization.

Qualifications

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor's or master's degree, or equivalent work experience, in business analytics, business, economics, or journalism (if the latter, with a strong emphasis on visual journalism).
  • Five or more years of experience in data science, analytics, or data-driven business strategy.
  • At least two years of a portfolio of shareable work demonstrating solid command of written English that's a pleasure to read and effective, compelling, and attractive data visualizations that influence for impact
  • Experience in rapidly understanding and translating data science techniques and results into written and visual forms understandable for action by a wide variety of audiences.
  • An ability to produce high-quality, presentation-ready results quickly.
     

Preferred qualifications

  • Second degree, certificate, or other demonstrated experience in visual design or data visualization.
  • Functional knowledge of cloud computing and online services business models, including business, technical, financial, and operational measurements.
  • Demonstrated stakeholder management, including clear and concise communication, effective prioritization, and rapid delivery of actionable results.
