As a Principal Data Scientist Manager, you'll have an opportunity to lead a team of data scientists to deliver insights across our broad portfolio of skilling initiatives and to carry out applied research in ML/AI designs that enable innovation within our skilling experiences. You will lead a cross-functional team of program managers and data scientists and partner across organizations to establish the analytics roadmap and bring creativity to solving problems in ways that allow for greater scale and agility. You will bring a passion for quality, a focus on the customer, and a willingness to experiment, all in support of driving successful learning outcomes. You will partner with data engineering to build and maintain an enterprise-wide set of data sources, ensuring our systems are compliant and built on quality data of known provenance. And you will motivate your team, inspiring them to deliver high quality, innovative solutions. 

Responsibilities

People Management: Deliver success through empowerment and accountability by modeling, coaching, and caring of a team of PMs and data scientists on a variety of projects from concept to completion. Build and lead a diverse team with capabilities needed to achieve current and future business objectives. Establish a team culture of curiosity and growth, embracing customer focus and continued learning and creating an environment that enables everyone to realize their full potential. 

Data Science Strategy & Planning: Shape the strategy of our analytics, insights, and ML solutions from envisioning through delivery. Develop science and engineering roadmap, run sprint/quarter/semester and annual planning, and foster cross-team collaboration to execute complex projects. Drive innovation and experimentation to enable identification of salient trends, definition of benchmarks and models for forecasting, as well as experience design validation and evolution. You will share your expertise and provide guidance to inform effective prioritization and investment in our portfolio of skilling offerings. 

Data Science Execution: You and your team will be accountable to convert data into valuable and actionable insights and recommendations by applying statistics, machine learning, experimentation, and other analytic approaches to support data-informed decision making. This will require the ability to observe patterns in the data, gather insights and provide the appropriate storytelling to senior leadership and team members at all levels of the organization to influence the direction we take our learning programs and experiences. You will establish engineering processes that ensure high quality, compliant data solutions in partnership across Analytics, Engineering, and Experimentation teams.

Research and Advancements: You will lead continued scientific innovation as a thought leader and practitioner. You will combine broad and deep knowledge of relevant research domains with the ability to synthesize a wide range of requirements to make significant contributions to drive learner success in our customers, partners, employees, students, and educators. You will collaborate across the data professional community to drive a data fluent culture by assisting with coaching with other day to day data skills. 

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Analytics or other Data programs or related field, or equalivant work experience
  • 10+ years’ experience in business analytics, software development, applied science, data science or in a related role.
  • 5+ years experience managing and leading teams

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Ability to embrace ambiguity and manage successful outcomes.
  • Strong communication skills, including experience presenting to leadership.
  • Demonstrated leadership in impacting the performance and innovation of your organization beyond the team you directly manage.
  • Track record of delivering innovation and results through technical leadership and collaboration working with cross-functional teams and matrixed organizations.
  • Exceptional problem solving, technical, and data analysis skills. 

The salary for this role in the state of Colorado is between $171,200 and $256,800.

At Microsoft, certain roles are eligible for additional rewards, including annual bonus and stock. These awards are allocated based on individual performance. In addition, certain roles also have the opportunity to earn sales incentives based on revenue or utilization, depending on the terms of the plan and the employee’s role.
