Microsoft’s Health Futures Team is an interdisciplinary team of scientists, researchers, engineers, program managers and medical doctors who work on cutting-edge research to help develop next-generation methods and tools for health, healthcare, and well-being. Within Health Futures, Microsoft Premonition is a diverse team of engineers, biologists, and computer scientists who are working to create technologies, sensors and platforms for continuously monitoring our environment -- at a global scale -- to detect potential pathogens, suppress disease threats before they cause outbreaks, support sustainability efforts, and beyond. Microsoft Premonition received Fast Company’s “2021 World Changing Ideas” award and has been identified as an enabling technology to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a full-time JD program OR a full-time master's or PhD degree program in fields of public policy, law, environmental sciences, computer science, data science, STEM, and related fields.

Interns are expected to be physically located in their manager’s Microsoft worksite location for the duration of their internship.

In addition to the qualifications above, you’ll need to submit a minimum of two reference letters for this position. Note that reference letters cannot be requested until after you have submitted your application, and furthermore, that they might not be automatically requested for all candidates. You may wish to alert your letter writers in advance, so they will be ready to submit your letter.

  • Had previous professional, volunteer, or research experience working in sustainability policy.

Applied Sciences IC2 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $5,090 - $10,120 per month. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $6,690 - $11,030 per month.

Applied Sciences IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $6,290 - $12,170 per Monthly. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $8,060 - $13,240 per Monthly.

Responsibilities

Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, students are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.

We are looking for an innovative, collaborative, and highly motivated intern to help us with our mission. This position will be focused on legal and policy considerations at the intersection of biological sensing, AI, and sustainability. The position will collaborate with several Microsoft teams and partners to research the role of new biosensing technologies and their novel data streams on biodiversity and sustainability from policy and legal perspectives. The successful candidate will help identify how Premonition technology and the broader data and AI landscape may shape processes, policies, regulation and partnerships to create more sustainable management of our environment.
