For our Microsoft Research lab in Amsterdam, we are seeking?senior research engineering candidates in deep learning and machine learning for science. Deep learning will play a central role in advancing scientific areas such as computational quantum chemistry, material discovery, drug discovery and computational catalysis. This role is an exceptional opportunity for candidates who are eager to apply their experience in research-oriented software engineering for the development of large-scale deep learning pipelines for scientific applications. The successful applicant will be part of a diverse team of other researchers and engineers in deep learning, machine learning, chemistry, material science and physics, located across multiple geographic locations in Amsterdam, Beijing and Cambridge. We are also keen to work with and contribute to the open-source software (OSS) community for the above goals.

Responsibilities

Design and develop large-scale deep learning research workflows for scientific applications. This includes infrastructure development, dataset handling, development processes, and resource management. A successful candidate will work closely with researchers and research engineers to translate algorithms into efficient implementations and roll out prototype systems to maximize research velocity. Furthermore, a successful candidate is expected to coordinate with researchers across the larger organization to identify and address future engineering needs of the team.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrable knowledge of fundamentals of deep learning. 
  • Experience in research-oriented software engineering for deep learning. For example, demonstrated by a completed MSc, or similar technical achievements.
  • Demonstrable ability to work in a large-scale software engineering, following good engineering practices (e.g., continuous integration, unit tests, type annotation etc.) 
  • Demonstrable ability to work in an interdisciplinary collaborative environment, evidenced by effective communication of technical concepts to non-experts from different technical backgrounds.
  • Passion to see research have real-world impact on key challenges for society.
  • Experience with modern Python programming and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch.

Preferred

  • A PhD or similar technical achievement with a focus on deep learning. 
  • Experience in or understanding of applying deep learning to scientific domains such as quantum chemistry or molecular simulation.
  • Experience working with high-performance computing systems. 
  • Experience with distributed computing. 
  • Experience working as a core developer of existing large-scale deep learning research pipelines.
