Job Description

The aim of Project Alexandria is to automatically extract business knowledge into a single, consistent knowledge base. This powers human-centric experiences that enable people to work effectively with organisational knowledge. The multidisciplinary team has strong traditions in knowledge discovery research which has been productized in commercial offerings such as Viva Topics. Incorporating and advancing state-of-the-art machine learning approaches - such as foundation models for text and structured data, knowledge-augmented machine learning models, and probabilistic generative models like diffusion models - is central to the team’s current ambitions and research agenda.

We are hiring an intern to join an ambitious research team on the future of work and enterprise knowledge modelling. The intern will join us for summer 2023, dates being negotiable. The exact internship projects will be chosen to fit the expertise of the successful applicant. We are interested in a broad range of areas including:

  • Representation learning for entity linking in KBs
  • Generative models for structured data
  • Joint modelling of text and structured data for knowledge extraction

We seek interns with expertise in one or more of the following areas: deep learning, probabilistic machine learning, and generative models. Experience in other areas such as automatic KB construction and KB-augment machine learning will be a plus. An ideal candidate would be willing to be part of a multidisciplinary team consisting of researchers, applied scientists, and engineers. Expected outcomes include advancements in machine learning approaches for enterprise knowledge modelling, with the possibility of publication in a relevant academic outlet and real-world product impact.

Responsibilities

Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, Microsoft Research interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, students are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community.

As a member of the Alexandira team, you will play an important role in realizing our ambitions for the future of AI-assisted knowledge work. Working closely together with other team members, and supported by a group of skilled engineers, you will take part in conceiving, implementing, and testing new ideas that can revolutionize how institutional knowledge is accessed within the enterprise.

During the 12-week Internship you will:

  • Advance state-of-the-art in enterprise knowledge modelling
  • Work with internal and external collaborators
  • Report and present research findings within Microsoft Research.
  • Report findings in research publications

Qualifications

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Currently enrolled in a PhD program in Machine Learning, Deep Learning, or related technical field. Exceptional candidates who are currently enrolled in their Masters program are also encouraged to apply.
  • 2 years’ experience with at least one of the following: PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX, or similar toolkits.
  • Published papers demonstrating your experience in your research field.
  • Experience and interest in deep learning, probabilistic machine learning, and knowledge modelling.
  • Developed original research ideas and innovative solutions.
  • The ability to work in a diverse and multidisciplinary team.

Exceptional candidates who do not satisfy all the above desired skills and experiences will be considered.
