Job Description

Do you love research challenges and enjoy creativity? Please consider this exciting new Post-Doc opening for a researcher to join the Data and AI group (D&AI) at Thermo Fisher Scientific. This research group is participating in a new EU program named OPINCHARGE. This Horizon program brings together 10 world-leading research and technology organizations across Europe striving to develop new characterization methodologies for next-gen battery materials. Our research group contributes by providing AI driven application features for analytical Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) to perform operando and in-situ analysis of battery interfaces.

The position:

We are looking for a motivated post-doc researcher who will investigate dose reduction in Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM). It would be great if you have materials science knowledge to understand the physicochemical effects of sample degradation while performing STEM imaging experiments. In addition, we look for someone that enjoys hands-on programming. This will be required to develop and implement novel scanning strategies for STEM acquisition. As Thermo Fisher is a large company with all knowledge and experience available in your colleagues, we believe that good interpersonal skills and being able to collaborate with our lab applicants is crucial to have first-hand access to the data.

In this role you will:

  • Integrate new measurement/post processing methodologies in the Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM).
  • Develop AI based solutions capable of alleviating dose requirements for beam sensitive materials.
  • Investigate the physicochemical effects which result from the interaction of the electron beam during (in-situ) measurements.
  • Be active in technology scouting and intellectual property generation.
  • Assist and drive collaborations with external partners from industry and academia.

The candidate:

The ideal candidate enjoys working in a multi-cultural, collaborative high-tech data science environment.

Besides that, you recognize yourself in the following aspects:

  • Have an academic education (PhD degree), preferably in chemistry, physics, data science, informatics or software engineering.
  • Knowledge about probability theory, statistics and machine learning.
  • Have some experience in working with Transmission Electron Microscopes.
  • Able to gain knowledge quickly, so that you get up to speed quickly.

Overall you are a nice teammate with good communicational skills (both written and verbal) and proficient in spoken and written English. You are an out of the box problem solver that comes with innovative research concepts for sophisticated technology developments. You are curious and not afraid to innovate. You are able to travel, up to 10%. E.g. visits and collaboration with the CRNS facilities at University Nantes, France
