How will you make an impact?

Be part of the genome engineering revolution. This scientist will develop tools and techniques to support genome engineering. This scientist will be expected to work in a highly collaborative team environment, supporting some projects with some supervision of a senior scientist and leading some projects independently. Projects may include, but not be limited to, cloning, developing gene editing strategies, and developing assays to monitor editing.

What will you do?

  • Directly interact with senior leadership within R&D and product management teams to develop and execute project plans towards software development initiatives
  • Proactively collaborate with internal R&D scientists to understand needs for new design and analysis tools
  • Develop or adapt state-of-the-art bioinformatics tools for designing CRISPRs, TALENs and other gene editing tools
  • Analyze sanger, NGS, flow cytometry datasets from the lab for gene editing experiments
  • Provide a vision for gene editing bioinformatics group and have a deep understanding of the direction the field is moving towards
  • Moderate to advanced-level understanding of molecular biology experiments and gene editing protocols
  • Communicate clearly across functions and to cell biologists your interpretation of sequencing results, propose additional experiments, dynamically adjust designs with statistical rigor and attention to details
  • Adapt quickly in a fast-paced environment
  • Serve as R&D product owner in developing commercial software products for customers

The successful individual will directly interact with senior R&D scientists and project management to execute project work plans. The scientist will be responsible for supporting or executing these plans to meet agreed upon deliverables and timelines. These activities will require a high level of independence as well as the ability to work in a highly cooperative team.

How will you get here?

Education

  • Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genomics or related fields with at least 5 years of experiment, (or)
  • Master’s degree with at least 9-10 years of experience

Experience

  • 5+ years of experience in communicating through presentations to scientists and/or software engineers
  • 5+ years of experience handling genomic databases (UCSC, NCBI)
  • 5+ years of experience designing and writing code for bioinformatics algorithms
  • 5+ years of experience in statistics and data visualization
  • 1-2 years of experience in developing and maintaining internal websites
  • Up to 2 years experience in developing applications in Amazon Web Services

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Expert in indexing large reference genomes using commonly available indexing algorithms
  • Expert in genomics tools such as BLAST, BLAT, LiftOver
  • Expert in setting up and maintaining databases (SQL)
  • Expert in Python, R
  • Expert in Linux scripting
  • Expert in Java (experience in C++ is a plus)
  • Familiar with Sanger (TIDE, ICE or similar) and NGS analysis tools (DESeq, edgeR or similar)
  • Moderate understanding of RNAseq, TargetSeq or similar experiments
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Flexibility and resourcefulness in working in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
  • Familiarity with software documentation software (GitHub, Atlassian or similar)
