Location/Division Specific Information

The position is based in Austin, TX and is part of the extended Bioinformatics team within the Clinical Next Generation Sequencing Division (CSD). The mission of this business unit is to develop next-generation sequencing based solutions to support research and IVD applications in oncology and other clinical domains.

What will you do??

You will:

  • provide complex and custom bioinformatics analysis to support development of targeted sequencing assays.
  • guide molecular biologists with data interpretation and analysis such as variant calling, CNV detection, RNA fusion detection and genome annotations.
  • support new NGS product introductions (NPI) and lead data analysis efforts for validation studies to be submitted to FDA for regulatory approvals.
  • work in close collaboration with other bioinformatics, software, molecular biology, quality, instrument, and product management teams, both at Austin and at remote sites.
  • apply innovative data science approaches to troubleshoot and improve NGS assay performance.
  • work independently, prioritizing, multi-tasking, and applying data analysis and problem-solving expertise to develop and improve products targeting important areas of unmet medical need.

How will you get here?

Education and Experience

  • A master's graduate degree in bioinformatics, statistics, mathematics, computer science or a related field required. PhD in bioinformatics, statistics, mathematics, computer science or a related field preferred.
  • You should have a solid knowledge of the next-generation sequencing analysis, background in statistics, understanding of data analysis principles as demonstrated by your publication history or industry experience.
  • Proficiency in Python or Perl, R, Linux shell scripting and scientific data visualization is required.
  • Experience with public cancer genomic data sources such as TCGA, COSMIC, ClinVar is preferred.
  • In depth understanding of genomics and molecular biology will make you a stronger candidate.
  • Experience with PCR primer design, molecular barcoding, sequence analysis is particularly welcome.
  • Effective communication skills, especially for presenting scientific results, keeping records and working collaboratively in a team of scientists are necessary.
  • Direct experience with product development cycles and IVD regulations is a plus.
