The Research and Development group of the Life Sciences and Mass Spectrometry business unit is offering a unique opportunity for a highly talented individual looking to gain experience and play a role in the design and development of technology critical to supporting Thermo Fisher’s position as the leader in mass spectrometry.

The selected candidate will take part in the company’s Internship Program, where they will be part of a highly innovative environment and work in an interdisciplinary team together with R&D scientists, application and marketing specialists, as well as external collaborators.

The intern will be responsible for their own project, which will focus on evaluating and analyzing methods for manipulating and analyzing ions on Tribrid mass spectrometers.

The intern will directly contribute to research efforts that aim towards improving performance of some of the Tribrid mass spectrometer key analytical applications. The key learnings from this research are likely to impact future product releases. Through mentoring by experts in the field, the intern will learn various aspects of analyzing, evaluating, and troubleshooting mass spectrometer instrumentation, develop a deeper understanding of method execution, and gain insight into the key underlying technologies.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The individual will characterize ion transfer and activation efficiency for different scan sequences.
  • The individual will perform theoretical analysis of the costs and benefits of different methods for ion analysis.
  • Process and present experimental results.

Required Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in chemistry, physics, engineering or related discipline (e.g. Bachelor’s).
  • Experience with programming in scripting languages such as Lua or Python.
  • Post-graduate mass spectrometry experience.
  • Basic understanding of RF Ion Trap, RF Quadrupole, and Orbitrap m/z analyzers. Some exposure and understanding of ion-ion methods and chemistry.
  • Familiarity with the operation of Thermo Scientific Tribrid Mass Spectrometers
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to efficiently present and explain scientific results to people with different backgrounds. There is an expectation that the successful candidate will communicate the results of their work to department and senior leadership.
  • Self-motivated and sense of ownership over the project in order to bring it to successful completion.
