Position Summary:

What will you do?

  • Lead a globally distributed team of interdisciplinary engineers and data scientists that receive mentorship from, and report back directly to C-suite leadership, spanning the Global IT and R&D organization.
  • Provide key support for the development and implementation of a strategic vision of data science, artificial intelligence, and machine learning across the R&D components of all business units at the company
  • Work with senior leaders within the business units to identify and prioritize the most impactful data science projects and opportunities
  • Identify and fill strategic gaps in the organization, ensuring we maintain competitive advantage across our global business
  • Coordinate companywide external vendor contracts and the development of a list of trusted vendors to complete the development of data-centric infrastructure that supports AI/ML algorithm development
  • Lead in the development of metrics, processes, and standards for the prioritization and innovation around data science (esp. artificial intelligence) projects and the development of data-driven productization
  • Run multiple R&D Artificial Intelligence programs and projects in parallel, ensuring on time completion and delivery into products for our customers
  • Advise individual business units on their data science strategy
  • Build an entrepreneurial environment for the exploration and development of new data-driven product concepts
  • Support the development of hardware conceptualization methodologies that consider data and analytic needs from beginning to end
  • Provide the connective tissue between the IT organization and R&D organization
  • Identify commonalities across silos; facilitate information sharing and reduction in redundant efforts, where appropriate

How will you get here?

Education

  • PhD in a scientific field that heavily demonstrates computational techniques or equivalent experience

Experience

  • 15+ years proven experience post PhD completion or equivalent
  • 5+ years working in machine learning or related field

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Demonstrated passion for artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML)
  • Ability to understand foundational research in ML and the skills to understand scientific R&D across numerous subject areas
  • Ability to communicate to C-level leadership the importance of AI/ML across our organization in the context of this rapidly evolving field
  • Team leadership experience, especially for highly technical engineers
  • Enthusiastic about new technologies and how AI/ML can accelerate R&D, yet realistic in its potential and its application
  • Excellent understanding of AI techniques and algorithms, such as deep learning, CNNs, RNNs, decision trees, clustering, ensembles, etc.
  • Knowledge of current deep learning models and commercially available deep learning products for life sciences, genomics, materials science, computer vision, etc.
  • Solid foundation in mathematics, especially probability, classical and Bayesian statistics, linear algebra, differential equations, and calculus
  • Experience with big data, data science, data wrangling, and databases
  • Excellent grasp of software practices and experience working in an Agile development environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, especially in presenting scientific results
  • Ability to engage with innovation leaders globally and high-level R&D leaders within a large, global company
  • Understanding of regulated software projects (HIPAA, FDA GMP, etc.) will make you a stronger candidate
  • Desire to continuously improve processes and practices
  • Strong technical and mentorship personality is vital

The salary range estimated for this position is $175,000-$200,000. This position will also be eligible to receive a variable annual bonus based on company, team, and/or individual performance results in accordance with company policy. Actual compensation will be confirmed in writing at the time of offer.
