In this role, you will be supporting strategic corporate technology direction and future electric motor products within Motion NEMA Motors in Fort Smith, Arkansas by initiating and driving solution development substantially impacting the NEMA industrial motor business.

This position reports to

Director of R&D - Electrical

Your responsibilities

  • Demonstrate technical leadership and drive R&D efforts using in-depth technical expertise in the field of electric motor design and development
  • Coach, mentor, and support colleagues in developing their skills to ensure high quality solutions. Lead, supervise, and coordinate strategic development projects within NEMA Motors Division
  • Lead activities to assist customers and colleagues in problem solving related to future technologies. Demonstrate proficiency and lead development of engineering processes and tools based on state of the art design methodologies, modeling tools (FEA), design optimization, and machine learning
  • Maintain a special emphasis on broadening R&D (Research and Development) competence in induction motor design methodology, modeling techniques, engineering tools, and test standards
  • Perform design optimization of industrial motors and a cost benefit analysis per internal practices and industry standards from fractional through integral horsepower range. Analyze motor test data for performance verification and document work results solidly, allowing others to maintain them
  • Anticipate and propose actions to mitigate possible quality problems early in R&D projects. Leverage in depth expertise and experience to contribute innovative and creative ideas to a variety of complex R&D assignments. Ensure appropriate protection of newly created intellectual property
  • Collaborate with Product Management and Operations on product specifications, application assistance, regulatory/certification requirements and processes

Your background

  • Master’s degree in engineering with minimum 10 years of experience or Bachelor’s degree in engineering with minimum 12 years of experience or PhD degree in engineering with minimum 8 years of experience
  • Preferred experience includes design of electric motors with a minimum of 5 years in induction motors, SAP, AutoCAD, and SolidWorks
  • Strong communication and team skills to work with Sales, Marketing, and customers

Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US
