In our ABB Research Center Germany your will develop cutting edge technologies which prepare ABB’s future digital offerings for our automation and electrification businesses for a more sustainable future. You work and collaborate on the border between industrial research, start-ups, and academic partners world-wide.

Your responsibilities

• With your experience, you initiate, manage, and participate in agile applied-research projects and work collaboratively with international ABB Divisions and their product development teams, end customers, partners, and known academic institutes.
• You work closely with your colleagues to systematically capture requirements for industrial applications in an agile manner.
• You frequently scout and tailor new architectural concepts and technologies for AI/ML-enhanced solutions.
• You join like-minded researchers, in designing and modelling architectures for AI/ML-enabled systems handling vast amounts of data coming from industrial sensors and actuators and devise new architecture design methods and software tools for such systems.
• You build prototypes to validate concepts, architectures and showcase your work inside and outside of ABB also with customers and scientific conferences.
• You provide consultancy in the field of your expertise to ABB Divisions.
• You secure intellectual property by patent applications and publish scientific articles.
• You strongly develop your technical and soft skills to boost your carrier inside ABB.

Your background

• You have a degree in computer science, software engineering, data science, or a related field, combined with either academic experience (PhD) or professional experience in software engineering or architecting of AI/ML-enhanced systems.
• We value cross-cultural communication skills, creativity, initiative, enthusiasm, and result-orientation to bring your innovations towards new products and digital offerings.
• You have hands-on experience in software design and development (e.g., Python, C++, C#, Java).
• Expertise in one of the following fields is a plus:
• Software architecture for distributed/cloud-native/edge-based systems as well as data architectures and web technologies,
• Data science, especially
• (Machine Learning Patterns (e.g., Transfer Learning, Hyperparameter Tuning etc.)
• Deep Learning Libraries (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, etc.)
• Distributed Machine Learning (e.g., Federated learning, Apache Spark, Apache Flink, Distributed TensorFlow, etc.)
• MLOps (e.g., MLFlow, Kubeflow, etc.)
• Generative AI (e.g., GPT-4, Llama, Dolly, etc.)
• Domain knowledge in process automation or discrete manufacturing
• Industrial automation technologies (e.g., OPC UA, AutomationML, IEC 61131-3, IEC 61499, etc.)
