Job Description

The UX team at ABB Corporate Research Center is proposing a cross-disciplinary Master thesis work in the field of process automation for generative AI and collaboration. The team consists of skilled UX researchers and designers responsible for visioning a future with human-centered AI solutions.

As a leading company in automation, we at ABB, are exploring the potential of Generative AI various industrial contexts such as mining, paper manufacturing and shipping. The introduction of a generative AI tool for collaborative decision-making and meeting various interconnected goals in various industrial contexts presents an unprecedented opportunity to transform how operators and management approach different business aspects. It may not only help to support individual decision-making processes with actionable insights that contribute to these goals, but also may has potential to empower collaborative workflow among multidisciplinary roles in the organization who have diverse expertise and priorities. Generative AI does not guarantee good use of technology.

The goal of this thesis work is to explore and develop generative AI demos with novel interaction possibilities and functioning features to facilitate human-AI collaboration, supporting operators to meet various goals. The model would be developed based on user research, to enable the operators to complete various industry tasks in a safe, productive, and engaging way. The thesis work will be a part of a user-centered design process, where the focus is on delivering novel Generative AI solutions with functional novel features for industrial users.

Potential research questions:

  • How can Gen AI’s capabilities align with and enhance workflows and processes across domains?
  • What opportunities exist for defining its features to better align with user needs? Specifically, how can Gen AI facilitate meeting various goals and collaboration?
  • Can Gen AI help operators navigate trade-offs between connected but sometimes contradicted goals, harmonize the decision-making process, and elevate the user experience? Any novel interaction modalities or approaches?

  • Location: Västerås, Sweden but remote work is possible

Your responsibilities

  • Be involved in user research for generative AI service in industrial context
  • Investigate generative AI models
  • Collaborate with UX team to explore and develop working generative AI solutions (demo/prototype)
  • Present thesis work to ABB Corporate Research Center
  • Expected Deliverables:
  • Generative AI demo with various novel interaction concepts
  • Recommendations for designing or implementing future Gen AI service at ABB
  • Recommendations and guidelines based on the learnings from your work, which will not only be beneficial for your thesis, but also for us at ABB

Your background

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Machine Learning
  • Computer Science
  • Data Science
  • Human-Computer Interaction
  • Independent, curious, outgoing, ambitious, and goal-oriented are qualities we are looking for
  • Proficient in programming
  • Previous hands-on experience in deep learning or neural networks
  • Experience in Generative AI is preferred
  • Knowledge in Human Computer Interaction is bonus
