We work in cross-functional teams at the intersection of industrial research, end-customers, start-ups, and academic institutions globally.

This position reports to

R&D Team Lead

Your responsibilities

  • You apply research trends in AI and machine learning, e.g. large language models and other generative AI methods, to solve real-world industrial problems from all of ABB’s business areas.
  • You bring your innovations towards new products and digital offerings that will enable the sustainability transformation.
  • You build proof-of-concepts and prototypes to convince internal stakeholders to commercialize our research results.
  • We work closely with ABB’s end-customers to develop innovative industrial AI solutions, either in internal projects or in public funded consortia projects like e.g., https://explain-project.eu/, https://keen-plattform.de/, or https://www.projekt-aprosys.de/
  • You participate in agile applied-research projects. Our projects run collaboratively with global ABB product development teams, ABB’s technology partners and academic institutions.
  • You present your work inside and outside of ABB to expert and management audiences, also at scientific conferences/journals and trade fairs.
  • You secure intellectual property by patent applications.
  • You strongly develop your technical and soft skills to boost your career inside ABB.

Your background

  • You hold a PhD in computer science, data science, physics, electrical or mechanical engineering or similar. Alternatively, you hold a respective MSc degree and have several years of work experience.
  • You have hands-on experience in software development and ideally also programming for data-driven solutions, incl. data engineering.
  • You have knowledge in an industrial domain, such as process industry, discrete manufacturing, electrification, or similar.
  • You have expertise in natural language processing. Additional expertise in ML for time series data is beneficial.
  • Hands-on experience with MLOps and/or DevOps is beneficial.
  • Knowledge in machine learning with prior knowledge, e.g. physics-informed neural networks, explainable AI and/or 1st principle models is beneficial.
  • As a plus you bring practical experience and interest in agile project management.
  • Proficient English skill is mandatory; additional German skill is beneficial.
