In your role as a research scientist, you work toward modern, reliable, and easy-to-use industrial IoT networks, devices, platforms, software tools, and data-driven applications. Ethernet-based technologies, TSN, or 5G private networks, as well as network architectures and intent-based interactions even for non-experts play an important role to interconnect industrial systems and applications. Data integration, information provisioning, up to machine learning technologies are of utmost importance to provide value to our customers.

Your responsibilities

  • As part of diverse, multi-disciplinary teams, you apply network technologies and design sustainable, scalable, and adaptable IoT system architectures.
  • You develop application-driven solutions and apply your knowledge of industrial networks, in conformance with industrial standards and regulations.
  • You team up to innovate in data-driven IoT systems, including edge/cloud or cyber-physical systems, digital twin and machine learning technologies.
  • With your technical expertise, you initiate, guide, and contribute to applied research projects, and provide consultancy to product development teams.
  • You collaborate internationally with ABB divisions, customers, partners, startups, and renowned academic institutes.
  • You build prototypes and showcase your work in demonstrators inside and outside of ABB.
  • You secure intellectual property by patent applications and publish scientific articles.
  • You have the chance to continuously develop your technical expertise and personal skills.

Your background

  • We value cross-cultural communication skills and creativity, initiative, and result orientation to drive your innovations toward new products and services. Proficient English skills are mandatory.
  • Above average degree in computer science, automation engineering, or a related field, combined with either academic (PhD) or professional experience of at least 2 years.
  • Experience with network architectures, network management (e.g., NetConf, SDN), or IP/Ethernet-based networking (e.g., Time-Sensitive Networking, Profinet).
  • Knowledge of data and system integration techniques (e.g., information modeling and transformation, fog/edge/cloud systems, machine learning) or middleware technologies (e.g., MQTT, OPC UA, Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Hands-on experience in prototyping and building HW-/SW-based demonstrators, including network management and software development.
  • Knowledge in one of the following fields is beneficial: domain knowledge in motion/drives or process automation.
  • Project management skills are a plus.
