The Opportunity

This position works out of our Established Pharmaceuticals Division (EPD) that is focused on growing portfolio of high-quality, affordable, branded generic medicines that been successfully treating patients for many years.

We are currently sourcing applications of a Data Scientist Internship opportunity in EPD, Basel, Switzerland within the Engineering Team in Advanced Analytics. 

Advanced Analytics harnesses cutting-edge artificial intelligence, machine learning, and neural network algorithms to generate maximum business value from existing data. The predictive capabilities of Advanced Analytics have the power to forecast trends, perform “what-if” analyses, and simulate the best course of action.

We are a team of Data Scientists, Engineers and Product Owners that are passionate about turning data into strategic insights . As an intern, you will be able to work closely with our highly skilled Data Science and Engineering teams, gaining hands-on experience and making meaningful contributions to a wide range of important projects that create value for our business.

Your main project will be Brand Check, an innovative AI project that leverages artificial intelligence / deep learning to extract features from images and other types of Abbott Marketing collaterals. The model is being rolled out globally to Abbott, ensuring impactful marketing materials. The project hold strategic importance, anchored with the Abbott Chief Marketing Officer in Chicago and will provide you with valuable learning opportunities to develop your skills in AI technology and its practical applications.

Some additions to the key deliverables would be:

  • Fine-tune the Brand Check Abbott imagery model by adjusting for learnings provided by the Abbott marketing community:
  • Support data gathering of imagery examples to improve model accuracy:
  • Build new AI models and detection capabilities for Abbott divisions being onboarded to Brand Check e.g. train model to detect special fonts, colors or text effects specific to a new division.
  • Build an AI detection model for Video and Audio
  • Refine and re-train models for regional characteristics/features e.g. India, Latin America, China etc.
  • Refine and re-train models based on user feedback
  • Explore modelling approaches and identify opportunities to improve Brand Check and ensure impactful Marketing using AI for Abbott
  • Support the Data Science team on project assignments generating insights for key EPD business domains incl. Marketing, Operations, Commercial and Quality. Hands on work on key Advanced Analytical products e.g. Forecasting, Generative AI for Marketing, Operations and Compliance, Computer vision, etc.
  • Support the Data Science team delivering the project pipeline for 2024.
  • Support the Data Science team on feasibility assessments and provide input for future project pipeline.
  • Interact with EPD AA and Abbott DS community of practice and enhance current Data Science tools and best practices.
  • Define and document best practices and strategies regarding application deployment and application infrastructure maintenance. 
  • Work on creating the blueprint of web applications that support the delivery of Data Science products of the team.

Tech Skills & Expertise

  • Education on Mathematics, Physics or relevant Data Science field
  • Excellent understanding of machine learning techniques and algorithms (supervised, unsupervised, semi-supervised), deep learning, information retrieval, Bayesian networks, reinforcement learning
  • Comfortable in at least one programming language, preferably Python
  • Basic knowledge of AWS Data Science Tools, Sagemaker, S3
  • Comfortable with SQL
