THE OPPORTUNITY

This position works out of our WESTFORD, MA location in the ABBOTT VASCULAR division.

Abbott Vascular provides innovative, minimally invasive and cost-effective products for treatment of vascular disease. Our extensive portfolio includes drug-eluting stents, bare metal stents, guide wires, balloon dilatation catheters, imaging catheters and software, vessel closure devices and peripheral stents.

Our site in WESTFORD, MA, outside of Boston, currently has an opportunity for a STAFF R&D ENGINEER - AI IMAGE CHARACTERIZATION . The fundamental function for this role will be to research and develop AI-based image characterization features for Abbott’s intravascular OCT imaging system. These features will aid physicians in interpreting anatomy and disease morphology and will help them optimize their treatment strategies and improve patients’ lives. You will work with cardiology experts to identify opportunities, with research scientists to identify data sources, and with software engineers to develop your solutions into production-ready software. 

WHAT YOU’LL WORK ON

  • Bring deep knowledge of both descriptive image processing and modern computer vision to help implement new algorithms, as well as enhance and maintain existing algorithms.
  • Develop prototype implementations in Python, present results and approaches to myriad stakeholders, prove the feasibility and viability of an approach.
  • This may include segmentation, classification, regression, alignment, and tracking on one or more imaging modalities (OCT, angiography, CT, etc.)
  • Work with software engineers to integrate your prototype into a well-tested, robust software system.
  • Help to document and test the feature within Abbott’s quality control process.
  • While there may be opportunities to publish and patent, your main goal will always be to create working software that solves real problems for patients.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Applied Math, Machine Learning, Data Science, Biomedical Engineering or a related mathematics-intensive field. Or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • 4+ years of experience developing machine learning or other data-driven software solutions.
  • Demonstrable programming skills in Python or similar language.
  • Demonstrated experience with algorithm design and implementation (including registration, object tracking, image/video analysis, deep learning, AI)
  • Deep understanding of convolutional neural networks (CNN), familiarity with at least one of the Deep Learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, Caffe, ONNX, etc)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Algorithm development experience for medical imaging applications.
  • Experience in CUDA programming, OpenCV, or ITK is desirable
  • Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, C/C++.

The base pay for this position is $90,700.00 – $181,300.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
