Job Description

You will be part of the Robotics team at ABB Corporate Research in Västerås Sweden. In our role as ABB Corporate Research, we ensure ABB's technology competitiveness now and in future.

In the Robotics team we focus on robot concepts / design, autonomous and intelligent robot, and robot applications in both industrial and service robot segments. Our research activities usually formulated as technology pre-study and technology development projects. We work closely with ABB's robotics business to ensure our research will bring unique value for ABB future business. At the same time, we have close collaboration with academic world to bridge the academic and industrial research. In this team, one of our historical highlights is the creation and development of the dual-arm YuMi robot concept and the mobile YuMi concept.

In this position you will be reporting Robotics and Mechatronics Team Manager.

Your responsibilities

  • You will be part of a team creating cutting-edge technologies of vision systems in robotic automation powered by AI. More specifically, the focus will be mainly easy robot programming, autonomous mobile robot control, and smart object grasping/manipulating, using robot control, vision and AI technologies.
  • The candidate is expected to have solid knowledge and rich hands-on experience in implementing / developing vision system and technology with a robot system. Such vision technology further combines with AI technology, to enable the next generation of autonomous robot, for example, to realize dynamic robot grasping under un-constructed environment.
  • This requires a good understanding of the latest vision and AI technologies, knowledge and experience of ML in modelling and training for real-world applications, good skills of programming, experience in the fields of robot control, AI and vision-guided robotics, and a good understanding of robot applications.
  • Our technology results need to be applied to real robotic systems for verification and validation. Hands-on/experimental work is necessary hence relevant development experience is an advantage.
  • You enjoy driving specific activities to successful conclusion while following a visionary continuity in your work.
  • The technology development results need to be documented as technical reports, invention disclosures, scientific articles.
  • It often happens you need to communicate / present research work with peers, working partners both within / outside of ABB, and key stakeholders.

Your background

  • Have a MSc or PhD degree of education in the subjects of robotics/control, machine vision or computer science.
  • 2-5 years experience in developing vision and AI technologies for robot applications is required. knowledge and experience of machine learning will be a merit.
  • Software skills in C++ and Python, and experience of ROS2 are important.
  • Experience with ABB's RobotStudio and RAPID programming is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of modern software development practices such as git/agile/continuous integration is considered an advantage.
  • To succeed in this position, you should be capable of working both independently and in a team. You will be working in an international environment. It is therefore required that you have good communication skills in the English language.
