Job Description

The Data Environments and Engineering Department (L176) in the Data and Human Centered Solutions Innovation Center is seeking an innovative thinker and problem solver to join our department leadership team as a Group Leader (GL) to champion the shaping of our division-level strategy, evolve the department’s data engineering capability, generate new work, ensure the quality and technical excellence of products and deliverables, and maintain the continued high performance and professional growth of our staff through influential leadership and mentorship. As a GL, you will be a first-line supervisor responsible for developing and growing MITRE’s talent and participating as an active member of the department leadership team.

Roles and Responsibilities

Department, Innovation Center, and MITRE Extended Leadership:

  • Work to advance the department’s data environments and engineering capability
  • Engage department managers and division directors in generating new work that integrates division and department capabilities for successful sponsor outcomes.
  • Shape work across MITRE Programs/Mission Areas consistent with department, division, and MITRE Labs strategies
  • Collaborate with the department manager, division director, and leadership within the division to define, shape, and scope initiatives that leverage department capabilities
  • Foster an environment and culture of innovation, technical leadership collaboration, and camaraderie.
  • Promote high technical quality of work products and participate in peer reviews.

Staff Development, Engagement, and Recruiting:

  • Communicate/cascade to group members the direction, intent, and messaging of MITRE leadership.
  • Work with each group member to develop goals that are measurable and have impact for MITRE and the sponsor.
  • Participate in regular discussions with project and task leads to ensure mutual understanding of expectations, performance, and growth opportunities.
  • Mentor group members to understand their career objectives, and to identify opportunities and development resources to grow professionally.
  • Ensure staff are aligned to work that leverages their strengths.
  • Manage challenging interpersonal dynamics and performance concerns among employees in their group, their colleagues, and the project leaders they support.
  • Track and assess group member performance and provide feedback that assists them to become successful.
  • Participate in department performance evaluation calibration sessions.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 8 years of related experience with a bachelor’s degree in one of the following disciplines: systems engineering, information systems, data analytics, computer science, or other problem-solving discipline.
  • 4-5 years of experience in designing or prototyping data environments and applying data management principles, methods, and practices across multiple data management domains such as: Data engineering, database technologies, data interoperability, records & knowledge management, data governance, data architecture, cloud platforms, data security & privacy, data quality, data science & analytics, data strategy, and master data management.
  • Experience mentoring and coaching staff.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to foster effective working relationships with staff, department management, division leadership, and internal and external customers.
  • An active DoD secret clearance or DHS fitness

Preferred Qualifications:

  • S. in one of the following disciplines, information systems, computer science, software engineering, systems engineering, data science, or other problem-solving discipline.
  • 3+ years’ experience in project, technical, and/or management leadership roles.
  • Experience generating new work and shaping work opportunities.
  • Strong working knowledge of collaboration technologies, software engineering best practices, and enabling accessibility through inclusive design.
  • Previous management or leadership experience
  • Customer and stakeholder engagement experience
