MITRE’s Center for Government Effectiveness and Modernization works across US Treasury, Commerce, and the Veterans’ Administration. These agencies affect every household in the country. Our job is to make them more effective.

As the operator of the agencies’ Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs), we have long-standing relationships across the IT, business, and research organizations for each agency. We work directly with the government’s own source data, and our projects are inherently multidisciplinary. You will grow technically, and you will be continually challenged with interesting problems. Most importantly, you will have both the opportunity and responsibility to make sure your work yields practical effect for public good.

Job Responsibilities:

We are presently seeking an early career data scientist for the US Treasury program. Our data-intensive work spans:

  • Improving the customer experience for people interacting with the agency
  • Detecting tax non-compliance (identity theft, fraud, filing error, missing filings …)
  • Anticipating non-compliance (developing schemes before observation is feasible)
  • Sampling and design of experiment
  • Forecasting (service demand, resource performance, program value)

You will work with data engineers, software engineers, domain experts, and other data scientists to detect signal in the government’s data and then to build applications that use it.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 2 years of related experience; or an advanced degree with relevant experience who can immediately contribute at this job step; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
  • Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or applicants who are eligible for security clearances.

Required Qualifications:

  • Academic background in statistics, machine learning, math, operations research, computer science, or related technical field
  • BS plus 2 years of professional experience or MS
  • Must be a US Citizen capable of obtaining & maintaining a US government clearance.

For our early-career data scientists, we expect at least two of:

  • Demonstrated proficiency with statistics software, preferably Python and/or R
  • Proficiency with inferential statistics, sampling, and design of experiments
  • Proficiency with machine learning packages

Preferred Qualifications:

  • You will be working with SQL, R, Python, Java, Scala, the Hadoop ecosystem, and Git. MITRE will aid your skill development over time but demonstrated proficiency with these tools will aid your candidacy now.
