Job Description

MITRE’s Human Language Technology (HLT) Department works across the full range of US Government agencies to provide language processing solutions to address complex mission needs for our sponsors. Our work provides opportunities to apply language processing solutions to real-world challenges and to research and prototype new methods to address mission needs. We are looking for highly motivated, adaptive, and self-directed candidates to perform research, development, engineering, evaluation, and integration in the field of natural language processing capabilities. We are looking for expertise in areas such as computational linguistics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, machine translation, speech processing, information extraction, knowledge base population, cross-language information retrieval, identity matching and other areas of human language technology. 

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Research, develop, and implement state-of-the-art techniques in the field of Large Language Models (LLM) and Generative AI.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and execute projects that leverage LLMs for various applications, such as text generation, summarization, translation, and more.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in AI, machine learning, and generative models, and apply this knowledge to enhance existing models and methodologies.
  • Analyze and fine-tune model performance through experimentation, iteration, and data-driven insights.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior team members, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous learning.
  • Contribute to research publications, whitepapers, and presentations to showcase the organization's expertise in the field.
  • Collaborate with product teams to integrate AI solutions into real-world applications and platforms.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 8+ years impactful experience in Al-relevant fields, such as machine learning, deep learning, multi-agent systems, planning, and large language models.
  • Master's or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field.
  • Proven expertise in working with Large Language Models, particularly GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) variants.
  • Strong understanding of generative models, deep learning, and natural language processing techniques.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and experience with deep learning frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive research projects from ideation to implementation, producing tangible outcomes.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a creative mindset to address complex AI challenges.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Published research papers or contributions to the AI community would be a significant plus.
  • Experience with deploying AI models into production environments is desirable.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a US government clearance (e.g., DoD Secret).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in computer science or engineering discipline related to artificial intelligence.
  • Track record of successful deployment of AI-enhanced decision systems that have been used by key decision makers.
  • Experience with testing and evaluation of AI systems, explainable AI, or AI fairness and bias assessment.
  • Active DoD Secret clearance or higher.
