MITRE’s Data and Human-Centered Solutions (DHCS) Innovation Center is a corporate resource with capabilities in data science, geospatial AI, social computing, data engineering, and social and behavioral sciences. We provide data and human-centered solutions to meet the most critical mission challenges of MITRE’s sponsors and stakeholders across the government. The Data Science department (L172) within the DCHS division is looking for qualified applicants for a Group Leader (GL) position.

L172 Group Leaders, in partnership with the Department Manager, share the management of the Data Science Department. The department has responsibility for developing several technical capability areas (TCA) including end-to-end data science, geospatial AI, and trusted machine learning. The primary locations of the department staff are McLean and Bedford with teleworkers across the US.

The GL is the first line supervisor and technical leader responsible for staff development and work program shaping. In performing this role, the GL works with project leads, task leads, and the Data Science department management to help staff find tasks and projects based on their skills and capabilities. The GL is a key member of the department strategy team helping to establish the department vision and actively contributing to the ongoing development and execution of the strategy.

The successful candidate is a motivated technical leader with hands-on data science or geospatial expertise who can lead projects. A GL is expected to balance management duties with direct work program contributions. The GL duties are generally anticipated to comprise a level of effort of approximately 10%. GLs spend the remainder of their time, 90%, as a team member or leader on one or more projects associated with the department capabilities.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Technical Leadership - Function as a data science or geospatial expert across multiple domains. 
  • Staff Management – Serve as the direct supervisor (DS) for 8-10 assigned staff, conduct regular performance and development conversations, staff advocacy and recognition, and communicates with Project/Task Leads on performance. Serves as the main point of contact for new employee onboarding and as a resource to guide staff in navigating the MITRE organization and processes.
  • Staff Engagement - Work with division and department leadership to develop and champion initiatives to increase staff engagement
  • Work Program Development - Identify new customers and opportunities, help shape new work programs, and generate new business for the department
  • Recruiting and Hiring – Play a key role in the department recruiting and hiring process, including screening resumes and candidates, participation in candidate presentations and technical panel interviews.
  • TCA Development – Work with technical capability leads to develop and enhance one or more technical capability areas while ensuring rigor, reproducibility, and reuse.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
  • Experience working across multiple sponsors
  • Strong desire to work with and mentor staff and to serve in a management role
  • Strong verbal, briefing, and written communications skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to foster effective working relationships with staff and internal and external customers
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOD secret security clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced Degree with strong research experience
  • Broad technical capabilities across the data science lifecycle
  • Advanced degree in computer science or data science and 5+ years of experience in its application
  • Strong network with project leads in one or more MITRE programs
  • Previous management or leadership experience
  • An active DoD clearance or DHS Fitness
