Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Intelligent Mission Aware Networking (IMAN) Technical Capability Area (TCA) Lead to join our growing team. The IMAN TCA will play a critical role in enhancing the resiliency and adaptability of mission-critical networks across the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, and other agencies. The IMAN TCA is focused on designing, prototyping, and building intelligent networking solutions for improving sponsor Command, Control, and Communication systems by assessing mission and business needs and using commercial and in-house developed innovative technologies. The IMAN TCA Lead will develop and implement strategies for improving C3 systems resiliency, optimizing performance, improving security, and simplifying management of mission-critical systems in austere environments. This role requires subject matter expertise and the ability to build, integrate, and test novel software tools to implement these capabilities.

The IMAN TCA Lead integrates across the technologies comprising tactical & edge networks, supporting related program divisions, and key external stakeholders to lead critical technical aspects of the TCA’s work. The TCA Lead guides planning and execution of the technical work program within the IMAN technology area and has responsibility for the technical products of that TCA. This role requires a strong understanding of tactical & intelligent networking, excellent leadership skills, and the ability to develop strategic partnerships with key stakeholders. The successful candidate will leverage available resources to build upon our IMAN capability successes to date. Specifically, the focus will be to:

  • Develop and execute a strategy to continue to mature Intelligent Mission Aware Networking into a vital, enduring TCA to deliver differentiated capability across MITRE and the sponsor.
  • Develop strategic partnerships with key MITRE program efforts to shape the IMAN work program in support of sponsor missions and MITRE Key Challenges.
  • Direct investment of MITRE resources to develop IMAN capabilities: capability development funds, capital equipment, and direct-project efforts.
  • Serve as the MITRE Labs technical focal point for tactical & edge networks to develop and integrate IMAN capabilities into relevant sponsor work programs.
  • Promote staff development and mastery of IMAN-related technical skills.
  • Understand and express to others the state of academic research, industrial development, and current sponsor needs for IMAN. Incorporate that understanding into the TCA strategy and work shaping activities. Understand and express to others how targeted investments in innovation and research (e.g., via MIP or other research funding sources) can contribute to the maturation of key IMAN capabilities.
  • Execute strategies to continuously improve technical quality and business efficiency of IMAN-related products.
  • Support MITRE Labs and Program leadership in quality assessment efforts, including Program Execution Reviews, Mission Value Chain (MVC) reviews, and Peer Quality Reviews.
  • Advise Innovation Center Chief Engineer, Technology Integrator, and Director regarding the maturity and life cycle of the IMAN TCA.
  • Partner with Department Managers to identify areas for the TCA to drive impact across the work program.

Essential Job Functions:

The successful candidate will have expertise in one or more Intelligent Mission Aware Networking technical areas and demonstrate the following key competencies and values:

  • Thought Leadership: The candidate will have a strong understanding of Intelligent Mission Aware Networking in academia, industry, and government, and have knowledge of the Intelligent Mission Aware Networking industry & market ecosystem. The candidate will understand and be able to express both the challenges and constraints faced by MITRE’s sponsors in evolving their Intelligent Mission Aware Networking infrastructures and the benefits that would accrue from such evolution.

Required qualifications:

  • Requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 7 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 4 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
  • Subject matter expertise in at least one of the following Intelligent Mission Aware Networking areas: Tactical Networking, Network Function Virtualization, Adaptive Networking Technologies, Software-Defined Networking in Contested Environments, and Resilient Network Protocols.
  • Demonstrated business or mission impact at scale influencing with and without authority.
  • Demonstrated examples of leadership experience in a professional environment (e.g., building a new work program, developing cross-cutting partnerships between MITRE Labs and FFRDCs, inspiring staff to achieve career aspirations and expand their and business roles).
  • Development and execution of strategy that embraces innovative solutions and applies them to sponsor challenges aligned to MITRE’s safer world mission.
  • Demonstrated ability to take risk and lead work with partial insights.

Preferred experience:

  • Demonstrated examples of partnership with other organizations (e.g., MITRE Labs, MITRE National Security Sector, and MITRE Public Sector) to provide integrated solutions.
  • Prior experience integrating data science into networking capabilities.
  • Ability to identify opportunities for external engagement across other FFRDCs, academia, and industry to partner on innovative solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead people; manage complex business, finance, legal, contracting functions, etc.; and deliver impactful results for our sponsors.
