Job Description

The MITRE Special Operations Department (N252) is seeking an Unmanned Systems (UMS) Engineer for the Special Operations Forces (SOF) work program as it grows in impact and pivots to meet challenges in the UMS mission space. N252 operates across a globally integrated team, and partners closely with other MITRE departments supporting the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) Headquarters, Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), the Service Component Special Operations Commands (SOCs), and the Theatre Special Operations Commands (TSOCs). We work with the SOF Community to reduce risk; impact mission success; and help ensure the safe return of operators.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Qualified candidates will have a strong technical background in Unmanned Aerial Systems or Robotics with demonstrated experience supporting the special operations, defense, or intelligence communities. The mission lead will partner closely with the Special Operations Department leadership team, as well as the other strategic elements within MITRE, to work as a unified team in support of SOF elements to help further development of tactical, operational, and strategic technological solutions and needs for the SOF community. The candidate must be able to work collaboratively with an integrated, federated MITRE team demonstrating strong teamwork and cooperation with Intelligence, Joint & Services, public sector, and other programs. The selected individual will be expected to work closely with military and civilian experts from across SOF to address their critical mission needs; provide options which anticipate operational needs; and identify relevant emerging methods and multi-layer assessments to address SOF mission challenges. 

Selected candidates will demonstrate the following:

  • Domain/Technical Competence. Demonstrate strong familiarity in two or more of the following areas: (1) Unmanned Aerial Systems, (2) Robotics Systems, (3) Computer Science, and/or (4) Electrical Engineering
  • Strategic Leadership. Create strong relationships across leadership and subject matter experts in legal, policy, intelligence, technical, and special operations community. Proactively and closely partner with SOF program team to deliver technical solutions for special programs, sensitive activities, and specialized missions. Actively collaborate with other projects supporting related sponsors to ensure maximum value and impact across MITRE’s sponsors.
  • Interpersonal Skills. Deliver strong leadership and develop a team that partners closely with both senior military leaders and action officers to identify tactical, operational, and strategic challenges, potential solutions; and communicate task goals and impacts clearly and effectively.
  • Collaboration. Cultivate an environment that develops robust network of MITRE and other professional connections to engage and collaborate with engineers and planners, subject matter experts, specialists, and defense acquisition professionals. Leverage MITRE technical expertise from the Labs, capabilities from the MITRE Platforms, and other sponsor efforts to support the FFRDC value proposition.
  • Senior Sponsor Experience. Comfortably and respectfully engage with both US and foreign nations’ senior military leaders and engineers as well as commercial executives and managers.
  • Flexibility and Suitability. Be able to modify and alter course as the environment and sponsor priorities shift. Understand the power of reach-back and be an effective conduit to bring the talent forward to execute at the right time. Operate within SOF culture and sensitive activities boundary conditions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of related experience with a Bachelor’s Degree in a technical discipline, such as Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, Manufacturing, Systems, Computer), Physics, or related fields; or 8 years and a Master’s Degree; or a PhD with 5 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
  • Able to obtain and maintain a US Department of Defense security clearance.
  • Active TS with the ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI
  • Experience operating in or with Special Operation Forces
  • Demonstrated previous team leadership experience.
  • Prior experience with US Department of Defense systems of systems integration
  • Effective and influential oral communications skills
  • Strong written communications skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in related field
  • Five years’ experience supporting and/or active within Special Operations Forces
  • Deep Familiarity with UAS industry and emerging technologies
  • Deep Familiarity with robotics control systems; various design software packages; and GNSS and RF jamming/spoofing.
  • Familiarity with MITRE Project Management processes, capabilities, and associated tools
  • Demonstrated capability for strategic planning and ability to provide actionable plans to government sponsors
  • Additional clearances: NATO TOP SECRET
  • SAP Eligibility
