Job Description

MITRE’s Data Science Interns in MITRE Labs help to design, analyze, and implement state-of-the-art data analytics solutions across a diverse set of government requirements, and supporting ongoing research and development projects. Activities range can run the gamut of the data analytics pipeline, utilizing the CRISP-DM process model, from data discovery through data deployment.

Examples of projects:

  • Researched open-source data for suitability for specific projects
  • Developed data models used for curating data in structured relational data stores
  • Developed automated load code for ingesting structured and unstructured data
  • Developed and trained improved models for sentiment analysis
  • Utilized graph databases for analyzing highly interconnected data
  • Developed algorithms for fuzzy name matching for people and companies
  • Developed ML algorithms for analyzing data
  • Developed APIs for accessing data
  • Developed visualizations for data using Jupiter Notebooks, Tableau, and custom JavaScript code

​Required Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelors, Masters or PhD degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Data Analytics, Mathematics, or similar field, with an interest and/or a strong foundation in at least one technical data science sub-discipline including: database design, data curation, relational database theory, graph database theory, machine learning, artificial intelligence, data visualization, data distribution.
  • High level desire to help their nation solve its most critical problems.
  • Sustained academic excellence.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Interest and breadth in several sub-disciplines within data science and analytics, including coding in Python and R, SQL, Cypher, JavaScript, and relational database design.

The successful candidate will:

  • Be passionate about applying data analytics to real world problems.
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Have an innate curiosity and interest in developing research questions and testing hypotheses with open ended tasking.
  • Present results in an intuitive, actionable manner that can be understood by all sponsor audiences, regardless of technical expertise.
  • Work with a spectrum of government sponsors to gain understanding of their challenges, evaluate possible solutions and conduct insightful, actionable analyses.
  • Support the development and application of a variety of analytical models to sponsor challenges, with a willingness to adapt and learn.

Candidates will be required to have significant academic concentration in at least one of the following disciplines:

  • Statistics
  • Mathematics
  • Computer Science
  • Computer Engineering
  • Demonstrated ability to manipulate large datasets
  • Experience with analytic tools such as Python, SAS, MATLAB, JavaScript, R, Java
  • Data Visualization tools such as Bokeh, Seaborn, Tableau, OBIEE, C#, JQuery
  • Ability to formulate ML algorithms and process to solve complex data problems

Salary compensation range and midpoint: $45,500 - $57,000 - $68,500 Annual
