Job Description

Within the AO, the SP leads and shapes investment strategy and outcomes to create outsized impact for MITRE’s strategic goals. Create and manage AO investment strategy within MITRE technical and business domains including performance parameters to address the sector, market size, technology trends, business model innovation, competitive landscape, social, and impact.

  • Create opportunities by leveraging MITRE’s capabilities to accelerate the government priority Critical and Emerging technology areas and R&D/S&T focus areas.
  • Develop our investment brand and manage relationships with: Private Capital firms, startup accelerators, founders, and other members of the venture ecosystem.
  • Work within MITRE invested funds to shape investment among critical technology for public good and sponsor whole of nation mission needs.
  • Leverage understanding of documentation and economic/legal structure of MITRE investments.
  • Proactively shape the sustainable use of MITRE technical resources to scan landscape and validate opportunities for investment.
  • Identify and create opportunities for use of MITRE Intellectual Property (IP) by portfolio companies.
  • Find and execute opportunities to spinout MITRE IP as a startup.
  • Lead internal teams in all stages of an investment including diligence, market, and competitive analysis, and developing investment themes, and deal negotiations.
  • Perform due diligence including financial modeling, financial and operational analysis, transaction structuring, and industry research.
  • Lead creation of investment memos and participate in investment committee discussions as needed.
  • Manage the overall transaction and closing processes.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Requires a minimum of 12 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 10 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 7 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
  • Experience working in a venture fund, incubator, accelerator, or corporate M&A/investments.
  • 10 years in investment banking, private equity, or venture capital
  • Exceptional financial modeling, analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving capabilities
  • Excellent writing and communication skills, excellent attention to detail, and good judgment
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively across industry, MITRE, and funds.
  • Intellectual curiosity and interest in creating impact beyond financial returns in society or economy.
  • Strong understanding of business or technology within one or more of MITRE investment sectors (Microelectronics, Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Healthcare, Biotechnology, Advanced Manufacturing, Advanced Energy, Advanced Communications, Integrated Deterrence)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree (MS, or PhD) in a technical area
  • 15 years in investment banking, private equity, or venture capital
  • Prior work in a nonprofit or federally funded research and development center (FFRDC)
  • Proven track record of growing an organization from vision to successful realization of the vision.
  • Extensive network spanning industry and government in one or more verticals (microelectronics, advanced communications, AI, advanced materials, advanced energy)
