The focus of the Hazard Identification Department, a member of the Transportation Safety Division, is to advance the United States and the world to the next level of transportation safety. We develop and apply analytical capabilities and techniques to generate in-time safety intelligence and actionable mitigations from operational data.

The Lead Automotive Telemetry Data Scientist will be part of the surface transportation safety team applying their expertise to multiple automotive, roadway, and autonomy safety research studies conducted in collaboration with government and industry partners. You will contribute to major surface transportation initiatives that aim to utilize vehicle telemetry data to make our nation’s roads safer.

Studies include the assessment of a variety of data collection and management techniques, identification of emerging safety risks that could be detected or predicted with telemetry data, application and development of machine learning models applied to vehicle telemetry data, and interpretation of safety analysis results to focus on actionable risk mitigation.

Responsibilities Include :

  • Engaging with government and industry sponsors to understand desired safety outcomes and associated research activities.
  • Developing technical work plans to achieve tangible safety benefits using vehicle telemetry data or other associated datasets.
  • Management and standardization of vehicle telemetry data to enable safety analysis.
  • Application of modern data analysis and machine learning techniques to vehicle telemetry data to identify emerging safety risks, quantify known safety risks, and inform safety research questions.
  • Interpreting data model outputs in the context of automotive safety.
  • Providing technical leadership to other MITRE staff in vehicle telemetry data analysis.
  • Representing MITRE on select committees/boards/working groups.

Required Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or related fields.
  • 5 or more years of related job experience.
  • Familiarity with automotive systems and subsystem architectures.
  • Software programming knowledge/experience (e.g., Python, R).
  • Experience working with databases (e.g., Oracle, MySQL).
  • Skills in safety management, spanning functional, organizational, and system views.
  • Able to operate effectively in complex, multi-stakeholder environments.
  • Able to creatively solve problems and think holistically about challenges and potential solutions.
  • Able to work collaboratively and effectively in a cross-organizational (e.g., matrixed) environment.
  • Able to work independently on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and the ability to convey complex concepts in a clear, compelling, and organized manner to a variety of audiences.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Master’s degree in related field.
  • Experience with Connected Vehicle (CV) architectures, including requirements development and data collection methods.
  • Experience with analysis of automotive telemetry data from both Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) and Electric Vehicle (EV) platforms.
  • Familiarity with the key priorities facing the automotive industry.
  • Experience with big data architectures and querying (e.g., Hadoop).
  • Experience with machine learning libraries (e.g., scikit-learn).
