MITRE’s Artificial Intelligence Innovation Center's Robotics and Autonomous Systems Department is an innovative team of engineers focused on the development of cutting-edge autonomous systems, robotics capabilities, and AI solutions for a safer world. The Robotics and Autonomous Systems Department has an exciting opportunity for an Autonomous Systems Expert. The right candidate will enjoy a fast-paced team environment, a broad array of challenging problems, and an opportunity to work with advanced technologies from across the field of autonomy. A successful candidate for this position will serve a critical role in enabling advanced autonomy capabilities both for our sponsors as well as internal efforts at MITRE.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain knowledge of advances of autonomy and robotics capabilities in industry and academia
  • Leverage technical expertise to evaluate and improve AI/Autonomy system performance
  • Provide thought and team leadership centered around autonomy/AI technology adoption on robotics hardware and cloud-based computing environments
  • Develop, propose, and lead research in the field of autonomy and AI
  • Evaluate autonomy or AI solutions and provide guidance to sponsors based on their requirements
  • Work on topics in robotics-relevant fields, such as computer vision, deep learning, machine learning, planning, human machine teaming, and multi-robot systems
  • Build a team, capabilities, and work program in one of more growth area for Autonomous Systems (e.g., maritime autonomy, healthcare robotics, space robotics)
  • Help department and division execute strategy around enabling high-consequence applications of Autonomy, including necessary assurance, T&E, and societal implications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Engineering Physics, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, or Software Engineering, or similar field
  • 15+ years of professional experience, or advanced degree and 10+ years of professional or post-doctorate experience
  • Understand the breadth of autonomous systems across different domains (DoD, Services, Intelligence Community, DHS, Industry and Academia)
  • Experience in robotics-relevant fields, such as computer vision, deep learning, machine learning, planning, human machine teaming, and multi-robot systems
  • Ability to articulate autonomy-specific challenges (in perception, reasoning, behaviors, collaborations), discuss critical issues, and identify gaps
  • Familiarity with the state of the art in the field
  • Knowledge of the challenges of developing autonomous and AI systems that are robust in real world scenarios
  • Must be a US citizen able to obtain and maintain a US government clearance **
  • Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office including Outlook, Excel, and Word
  • Must have demonstrated proficiency and strength in verbal, written, PC, presentation, and communications skills
  • Proven ability to work independently to learn new technologies, techniques, processes, languages, platforms, systems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills along with the ability to foster relationship development with sponsors

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in technical field of study
  • Experience leading either technical or project teams, or serving as a group direct supervisor
  • Practical knowledge of simulation environments for AI/autonomous systems
  • Understanding of the Federal Government, specifically with relation to AI and Autonomy interests, missions, and organizations
  • U.S. Citizen with active/current DoD Secret Clearance
  • Experience developing machine learning solutions with modern toolchains, e.g. TensorFlow, MXNet, Scikit-Learn
  • Experience with robotics software and frameworks, e.g. ROS
  • Experience with object-oriented programming languages such as C++ and python
