Job Description

The Merchant Data Science team researches and develops algorithms that power areas like supply chain, pricing, assortment optimization, replenishment, store layout, etc. You will be working closely with other data scientists, machine learning engineers, operations research scientists, data engineers within the team as well collaborate with business teams, product managers, corporate strategists, software engineers and analysts.

Our team specifically partners with Omni-channel Supply Chain Strategy team to provide intelligent solutions to make highly visible and big impact decisions for Supply Chain Network transformation at Walmart. The work includes solving problems such as inbound network design, middle mile network flow optimization, various facility location determinations, last mile ecosystem design, pilots and measurements, monetization, transportation problems, return item strategy for ambient as well as fresh networks to provide Walmart a competitive edge in the medium to long term.

We work with various techniques primarily from operations research and often make use of techniques from machine learning (classical machine learning, deep learning, reinforcement learning), causal inference and statistics. Our work is innovative and is always encouraged to be published in top tier conferences and journals.

What we are looking for

  • Ph.D/M.S. in a quantitative discipline (Operations Research, Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics etc.) with 3 years of relevant work experience.
  • Leverage your thesis in Industrial Engineering, Operations Research or equivalent quantitative field involving math programming techniques such as linear, integer programming, non-linear programming (convex, non-convex), stochastic programming, statistical and machine learning methods
  • Experience with one or more of optimization toolkits/libraries like CPlex, Gurobi, XPressMP, Open-source solvers (CBC, GLPK) etc.
  • Strong software development skills in languages such as Python, Scala, Java or C++.
  • Ability to communicate your results from deeply technical to non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to influence and collaborate with cross functional leaders

You’ll sweep us off our feet if… 

  • You've proven experience in operations research, transportation logistics, and/or supply chain strategy.
  • You have proven ability as a full stack OR/data scientist who develops, optimizes, and scales models for the production environment 
  • You connect the how and why, using your knowledge of scientific theories and methodologies to derive the best approach that is fit-for-purpose 
  • You have a proven ability with statistical methods and advanced modeling techniques (e.g., SVM, Random Forest, Bayesian inference, graph models, NLP, Computer Vision, neural networks, etc.) along with the optimization and OR techniques
  • You have publications in Journals (ordered by rank): OR, EJOR, ORL, IJOC, IJPR, POM, WSC or INFORMS conference papers
  • You have experience with Cloud technologies such as GCP, Azure as well as with Spark, Hive and TensorFlow etc.
