Personalization team at Walmart is dedicated to the mission of knowing our customers better and making it frictionless and faster for them to get what they want while building a trusted partnership with Walmart. The Personalization team consists of big data geeks, application engineers, scientists and product visionaries all working together to design, prototype and build technology-driven products and experiences that will change the future landscape of e-commerce. We are focused on building an intelligent system that will enable 1:1 personalized customer experience, from finding the product to delivering it to the customer. We are building state-of-the-art probabilistic models and engineering marvels to serve our customer needs by leveraging cutting edge machine learning, deep learning, reinforcement learning, natural language processing, entity-relationship extraction and knowledge representation. This will span many markets, business models and form factors; therefore, we are looking for scientists and engineers who will bring not only an abundance of experiences in technologies, but an abundant curiosity to innovate.

You’ll really wow us if…

  • You’re experienced with traditional, as well as modern machine learning/statistical techniques, including Regression, Classification, Ensemble Methods, Deep Learning and Reinforcement Learning.
  • You have strong development experience with at least one programming language (Python or Java preferred). 
  • You have strong hands-on skills in sourcing, cleaning, manipulating, and analyzing large volumes of data using distributed computing platform. 
  • You have strong written and oral communication skills.
  • You have experience working on ranking, online advertising, recommender systems, ecommerce or relevant areas. 
  • You’re experienced with end-to-end modeling projects emerging from research efforts.
  • You have an excellent industrial or academic track record of proposing, conducting, and reporting results of original research, plus collaborative research with publications.

This role will be responsible for:

  • Research and develop novel data-driven capabilities to power Personalization experiences across site, app, stores, voice commerce.
  • Lead and innovate in building state-of-the-art algorithms and machine learning systems to ingest, analyze and serve terabytes of customer data from various Walmart channels.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest machine learning and deep learning algorithms that power Personalization on Walmart and other tenants like Online Grocery. These techniques involve a complex mix of statistics, probability, optimization methods which enable machines to make data-driven decisions at scale to personalize site content according to customer preferences.
  • Stay proficient with big data technologies such as but not limited to Hive, Spark, Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Map-Reduce framework, and build algorithms to be able to handle massive amounts of data generated on the web and make data-driven inferences at scale.
  • Stay updated with the latest data science and software engineering technologies being used within the Personalization team such as but not limited to Java, Hive, Map-Reduce framework, Python, Bash scripting, Couchbase, Machine Learning packages like Scikit-Learn, Numpy, and Gensim.
  • Work with other team members in Personalization data engineering, modeling teams and web service professionals to deliver key projects
  • Participate in designing different components in Personalization backend systems, from data collection to enabling machines to make data-driven decisions at scale, thus building highly scalable and relevant solutions to drive key business projects. This may require collaboration with peers and other teams.
  • In absence of existing methods to attain business objectives, the individual is required to research and innovate. They may be required to develop new machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques to achieve the business goal.
  • Clearly articulate her/his work and be able to document, track and present accomplished tasks through tools such as Jira, Github, Confluence, etc.
  • Analyze customer and catalog data to build state-of-the-art personalized item recommendation models.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Option 1- Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field and 4 years' experience in an analytics related field.
  • Option 2- Master’s degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science,
    Information Technology, or related field and 2 years' experience in an analytics related field.
  • Option 3 - 5 years' experience in an analytics or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of one or more assessments in Python, Spark, Scala, or R
  • 4 - 6 years of experience using open-source frameworks (for example, scikit learn, tensorflow, torch)
  • Master’s degree in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Information Technology, Operations Research, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Econometrics
  • 4 - 6 years of experience in Data science, machine learning, optimization models

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s or Doctoral degree in Computer Science (with a focus in Data Mining, Machine Learning and at least one of its disciplines, such as Natural Language Processing and Computer Vision), Statistics, Econometrics, Computational Neuroscience, Operational Research, Physics, or any other quantitative disciplines that require processing and modeling data at a large scale
  • 2+ years of relevant industry experience
  • Proficient in Python, SQL, Spark, the associated Python and Spark packages commonly used by data scientists, and Deep Learning libraries, such as Tensorflow, Keras, and PyTorch
  • Proficient in other languages, such as R, used in data science is a plus
  • Strong understanding of and practical experience in a wide-range of machine learning algorithms
  • Good understanding of and practical experience with statistical modeling
  • Practical experience of using cloud computing
  • Experience working with large structured and unstructured datasets
  • Working knowledge of relational and NOSQL databases
  • Basic knowledge of data engineering is a plus
  • Certificates earned in data mining, machine learning, deep learning, statistical modeling, cloud computing, and data engineering is a plus
  • Interested in applying data science to solving retail-related problems
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
