About the Team

The Catalog Data Science team is responsible for keeping Walmart’s massive catalog data in high quality, and further enriching this data to help supplier onboarding, merchandise acquisition, inventory management, and shopper experience. We use cutting-edge technologies in software engineering, machine learning, deep learning, and analytics to tackle problems ranging from natural language understanding, image classification, and recommendation to outlier detection, visualization, and model serving. We write solid production code in Python, deploy and support model services and pipelines, and drive the limits in latency, throughput, and scalability. The work has high impact on business and user experience.

About You

What you will do

  • As a first-line manager, start with 4-5 data scientist direct reports. Manage the team members’ work assignments, professional growth, and training.
  • Continue a few established projects; take them to new levels of performance, stability, and business impact.
  • Identify areas of opportunity; initiate new projects in collaboration with product managers, leadership, partner teams, and business stakeholders.
  • Develop relationships with Wal-Mart functional areas to identify best practices, solicit input/data, coordinate inter-disciplinary initiatives and gather support for recommendations.
  • Effectively organize, assemble, and use all available resources to ensure project success.
  • Communicate clearly and persuasively via email, verbally, and presentations. Tailor communications to the audience and modify approaches as needed for maximum impact. Excel in communicating with individuals and groups and to all levels in the organization.
  • Drive discussions on model strategies, system performance, architecture, choice of technologies, production issues and other matters critical to project success and the team’s technical health.
  • Remain up to date with the advancements of ML/DL techniques and software practices. Provide hands-on help as needed in areas of your strength.

Required experiences and skills

  • Option 1: Bachelors degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and 4 years' experience in an analytics related field.
  • Option 2: Masters degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and 2 years' experience in an analytics related field.
  • Option 3: 6 years' experience in an analytics or related field.

Preferred experiences and skills

  • Master’s or PhD degree in a technical field such as Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, etc.
  • 5+ years of deep technical work experience in a software engineering or data science team.
  • 3+ years of experience leading whole lifecycles of projects that involve multiple team members (i.e. not solo projects).
  • 1+ years of people management experience.
  • Substantial experience working across functional units, communicating with product managers, business stakeholders, partner teams and leadership to set project roadmap, resolve dependencies, adjust priorities, hit deadlines, explain strategies, obtain understanding and support, solve production issues, present results.
  • Experience conducting regular conversations with reports and mentees, giving and receiving feedback, adjusting work assignments as needed.
  • Substantial hands-on experience developing scalable software systems, dealing with complex problems and large amounts of data.
  • Substantial hands-on experience in ML/DL methodology research, implementation, and productionization. Solid understanding of the “model” development process and pitfalls.
  • Good skills in Python programming.
  • Experience with Big Data technologies (such as Hive, Spark, Kafka, BigQuery, ElasticSearch, Mongo, MySQL) and public clouds (Azure, GCP, AWS).
  • Experience in dealing with more difficult situations in project and team management, such as dependencies on partner teams, externally-visible production issues, inexperienced or unproductive team members, slipping deadlines, and various communication difficulties.
  • Experience in proposing, initiating, and establishing new projects.
  • A disciplined approach to software development, code review, sprint planning and tracking, testing, documentation, and code quality in general.
  • Experience with machine learning “platforms” and pipelines.
  • Experience with distributed systems, using tools such as Spark, Dask, Ray, Kubernetes, etc.
  • Experience in developing and using Restful APIs for model services.
