Job Description

This position will lead Center Excellence (CoE) for the Data Analytic team at Sam’s Club. The CoE serves as a critical cornerstone to: 1) standardize data science best practice; 2) guard organization intelligence and facilitate collaboration; 3) acquire and develop data science talents.

What you will do…..

Technical leadership for analytic community: This is a hand-on leadership position. You will lead a team of data scientists to build the new CoE. Develop expertise of the data domains that are owned and / or related to the business function that this role supports. Train and coach other analytic staffs, whether in his/her own team or in other teams, in mastering technical knowledge of the respective data domains to deliver analytic solutions / insights for business stakeholders that may or may not be the stakeholders this role is responsible for.

Business Thought Partnership: provide thought leadership and counsel to stakeholders in exploring possible data solutions to address business questions and business needs. Influence business to define problem statement. Translate business requirements into strategies, initiatives and projects, align them to business strategy and objectives. Provide actionable business insights and / or analytic solution to stakeholders, co-develop business solutions to grow Sam’s Club’s business and meet business targets, influence business decision making.

Data Strategy: Understand, articulate, interpret, and apply principles of the defined strategy to complex business problems. Leverage experience and learning to inform and influence data strategy that typically spans one or more functions or domains.

Data Source identification: Define data requirements to solve business problems / develop data solution. Direct usage of appropriate internal an external data sources based on business and technical requirements. Define data quality guideline and align data governance.

Analytic solution / business insights development: Create, modify, adopt new or existing analytic solutions / insights to solve business problem / address business need. Assemble or influence required resources, whether they are within his/her control or in other teams, to develop analytic / data solutions and / or to analyze / manipulate data. Analytic solutions include but not limited to analytic modeling, analytic algorithm, data visualization, scorecard, dashboard, adhoc analysis.

Coaching and developing high-performance team: Train, develop and coach staffs on technical and professional skills. Conduct on-the-job training for staffs. Role model company’s value and inspiring leadership. Guide and coach staffs on career development. Perform other duties required for people manager.

Organizational leadership for analytic function: Co-develop & co-lead with other leaders in Member & Business Intelligence on function’s organizational initiatives and roadmap, including but not limited to: technical / work process best practice, training, succession, career development, mentoring other associates outside his/her own team in the function for skills and career development

Business Acumen: Has strong business mindset, understand how business is operated, how business decision is made in the business area that this role supports. Think like a business owner running the business when deriving actionable insights / recommendation from analytic solutions / data. Being a partner in co-owning business solutions w/ business partners.

Influential Communication: Has good ability to unearth and anticipate other people’s motive and desire in working environment, take into account of business partners’ needs in co-creating business solutions that create win-win results; communicate in a manner that other people can understand, accept the intent behind what needs to be done; has outstanding ability in gauging business partners / resources to support planned business actions

People Leadership: Has track record of being good coach in helping other develop professional skills on the job. Has good experience and judgement on choice between coaching and supervising employees situationally.

Travel…

Travel could be required from time to time to support business activities

Minimum qualification….

  • Option 1: Master’s degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related field and 5 years’ experience in analytics related field. Option 2: PhD in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related field and 3 years’ experience in analytics related field
  • 5 years’ experience in analytic modeling, with minimum 3 years in working with big data
  • 2 years’ experience of supervising analytic professionals
  • Successful completion of assessments in SQL

Preferred qualification….

  • Successful completion of assessments in Python/R;
  • Experience in CoE or data governance;
  • Experience in modeling and solving ambiguous problems;
  • Savvy to navigate through a large and complex corporate environment.
