Job Description

Walmart's People.AI team is seeking an experienced senior manager to lead the ML Production Engineering team. At People.AI, we use our large and unique datasets about our employees to model, augment, automate, and reimagine all aspects of their digital experience.

This is a vital role on the team with significant growth prospect, reporting directly to the Director of ML Engineering. You will be part of an Agile team dedicated to productionizing machine learning applications and systems at scale. You’ll focus on the machine learning architectural design, develop and review model and application code, and ensure high availability and performance of our machine learning applications using existing and emerging cloud technologies. We are looking for someone who is eager to lead the development of large machine learning systems alongside talented modelers and engineers, as well as a strong architect who can create simple, reusable abstractions for performing complex machine learning tasks.

You’ll sweep us off our feet if…

  • Experience leading teams both technically and in a formal management capacity
  • Good communication skills and the ability to understand and synthesize requirements across multiple domains
  • Deep knowledge of and experience in building end-to-end machine learning pipelines or architecture
  • Highly skilled in the technologies we use and learn daily: Python (ML, web server), Cloud Platform (Azure, GCP), Kubernetes, Airflow, SQL
  • Well-developed software engineering fundamentals and the ability to write production code when needed
  • Intellectual curiosity and a passion for MLOps and cloud technologies

You’ll make an impact by…

  • Recruit, lead, and mentor a strong team (current team size of 3, with future growth planned)
  • Shape the People.AI product roadmap using an understanding of both business requirements and machine learning architecture
  • Dive deeply with members of your team to provide coaching that ensures their success, providing hands-on technical guidance and direction in critical high-impact areas as needed
  • Partner and collaborate closely with People.AI product and business leaders
  • Work cross-functionally with product, data science, app development, and data engineering teams to prioritize efforts that will bring your team’s work to life. Identify new opportunities, develop prototypes, achieve buy-in from partners, and communicate staffing needs
  • Effectively communicate your team’s work to other senior leaders and the executive team on a regular basis
  • Leverage or build cloud-based architectures, technologies, and/or platforms to deliver optimized ML models at scale
  • Model the MLOps ways-of-working by leveraging CI/CD best practices, including test automation, model retraining, and monitoring, to ensure successful deployment and continuous operation of ML systems
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest state-of-the-art techniques in machine learning and foster a culture of learning within the organization
