Launch innovations in nearly every commercial and defense aircraft platform

Technical lead for the development of computer vision, artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomy technologies for aerial vehicle platforms. Responsible for crafting and implementing multi-year research plans ($1+Million / year) supporting technologies for automatic and autonomous vehicle operations, including navigation and position estimation, obstacle detection, etc. This includes the development and implementation on prototypes of both classical and deep learning-based systems for visual navigation, object detection, classification, etc.

The technical lead will define the best set of sensors and computational architectures for various multi-sensor aerial and ground platforms to support different autonomy tasks and lead data collection and sensor characterization efforts. The position requires leading both internal and external customer projects with distributed teams. It is expected the technical lead will have regular interface with peer groups, business leaders, flight test groups and product engineers to define technology roadmaps, key milestones, capability demonstrations and funding requirements.

The position will require mentoring and supervising technical work of global team members as well as advising business leaders on mergers, acquisitions and investment targets. The role will require formulating collaboration strategies with external partners to accelerate Honeywell technical capability and product maturation. This includes writing white papers proposing new concepts and developing proposals for aerospace business customers and DoD agencies.

Furthermore, the position will enable the technical lead to establish and maintain research relationships with university partners around technologies of interest to Honeywell.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and lead computer vision technologies supporting autonomous and unmanned aerial vehicles, and alternative navigation solutions
  • Lead Voice of Customer (VOC) activities with key external and internal customers, leading to the development and transition of key computer vision technologies
  • Drive technology transitions and productization of key computer vision technologies to develop hardware, software, edge solution and integrate it onto key Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) and Urban air Mobility (UAM) platforms
  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment with rapidly changing priorities that require quick adaptation

YOU MUST HAVE

  • Graduate Degree in Aerospace, Electrical Engineering, Robotics or Computer Science
  • Expert in computer vision, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) as applied to autonomy and navigation for UAM and UAV applications
  • Minimum 6 years managing technical R&D programs for internal customers or external customers such as AFRL or DARPA

WE VALUE

  • Experience deploying complex computer vision solutions on unmanned systems for autonomy applications such as automatic landing/takeoff, landmark navigation, visual odometry, optical flow, target tracking or detect and avoid
  • High level programming skills (Python, C++ or Java)
  • Experience with simulation environments and hardware in loop simulation setup
  • Experience with new methods of computer vision including machine learning (especially deep learning)
  • Experience working with business leaders to define technology and product roadmaps
  • Experience leading technical teams to integrate sensors (e.g., Camera or LIDAR) and algorithms on embedded platforms
  • Experience writing DoD proposals, including technical content and developing accurate project cost and resource forecasts
  • Team player who can both lead and collaborate
  • Thrives in a fast-paced dynamic environment
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to work directly with sponsors and customers
  • Creativity, technical curiosity and breadth of knowledge
