Boeing Research & Technology (BR&T) is currently looking for a Senior Engineer/Scientist in Perception/ML, Automation & Control to join their team in Seattle WA, Huntsville AL, Cambridge MA, or North Charleston SC.

The ideal candidate will be able to work independently and as part of a distributed (and international) team. Many projects are multi-year and end with the successful transition and integration of new capabilities to Boeing end product development/deployment. Project work can be funded by Independent Research and Development, Internal Application Development, Contracted Research and Development, or support to a Business Unit.

A successful candidate will be an experienced and motivated Engineer/Scientist in Perception/ML, Automation & Control who is technical leader, mentor, and consultant for the company. They will lead research and development (R&D) by rapidly prototyping advanced intelligent systems for automated and autonomous aerospace products. They will have broad knowledge of intelligent systems including sensing, planning, reasoning, control, and actuation. They will be comfortable in taking initiative, learning from others and by experience, seeking feedback, and creating innovative ideas. They will get great satisfaction in applying and engineering solutions that will work in the real world.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Researches, develops and prototypes advanced software technologies in the domain of 3D reconstruction, localization, object detection, and scene understanding
  • Performs advanced intelligent systems research: decision making & planning, control schemes, image processing and fusion, distributed control, sensory data, perceived environment model, and human-machine interfaces.
  • Analyzes and improves efficiency, accuracy, scalability, and stability of currently deployed systems
  • Adapts and integrates various hardware and software capabilities into workable prototypes
  • Ability to design, create, and evaluate new or modified data analysis algorithms to meet application requirements, such as statistical analysis, machine learning, and visual analytics.
  • Leads technically the development and design of intelligent systems approaches and solutions
  • Develops roadmaps and architectures to meet long-term business needs
  • Designs, develops, and evaluates algorithms, models and architected systems.
  • Implements software agents and software programs to satisfy requirements.
  • Effectively communicates results to teammates, management, and customers.
  • Demonstrates an interest in personal learning and development.

This position allows telecommuting. The selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at one of the listed location options.

The position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry
  • 10+ years of software development experience
  • 7+ years developing controls and intelligent systems
  • 5+ years leading/ and or managing a technical team
  • Experience with Computer Vision techniques including Machine Learning
  • Experience with high level programming languages such a C++, C, Java
  • Experience with sensors, embedded systems, and system integration
  • Experience with designing systems using feedback for decision and control
  • Experience in pattern recognition, fusion, calibration and visualization

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Master’s degree or higher preferred in Engineering, Computer Science, or similar
  • Proficient in cross-disciplinary areas including statistics, pattern recognition, cognitive science, data mining, adaptive control and computer science
  • Experience with routing, motion planning, and robot/vehicle control, maps, localization, perception, and prediction
  • Experience with software architecture, design patterns, and data structures
  • Mathematical modelling of complex physical mechanisms including robotics
  • Strong knowledge of mathematics
  • Experience with software lifecycle practices, agile methodology, and repositories, such as JIRA and Git

Typical Education/Experience:

  • Typically 20 or more years related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+15 years, Master+18 years).
