Location: In line with the Allianz New Working Model, this role is expected to be a ‘hybrid’ position, meaning a mix of both home and office work, with travel to our Guildford office on a monthly basis.

Join us and work alongside data scientists, geospatial experts and other data specialists in developing, deploying and running data products that enable us to better serve our customers, and to create competitive advantage.

About us

Datalab is small and fast-moving team of data scientists, analysts and engineers, delivering advanced analytics, geospatial and machine learning-powered data products to the Allianz Commercial business. As one of the largest general insurers in the UK we have unparalleled access to data, and whilst we have our fair share of legacy IT, we are rapidly transforming and modernising our data stack, in particular building in the public cloud (Azure). We create meaningful business value, using the latest data tools and methods, our vast pools of data, combined with deep industry expertise.

Our products have helped to uncover trends and opportunities, combat fraud, optimise decision making and automate operations.

 You will:

As an Analytics Engineer, you will join the Allianz Commercial datalab team, under the direction of the Head of Analytics. Your day-to-day work on strategic data projects, agile proofs-of-value and development of enhanced data capabilities will comprise a wide range of activities, including:

  • Creating and maintaining data pipelines to transform and deliver data between systems;
  • Developing and deploying web applications and APIs to the cloud;
  • Working with data scientists to test and deploy AI and ML models;
  • Creating consumable reporting and insight to realise business value;
  • Exploring and understanding new technologies, including collaboration with the wider Allianz Group data community;
  • Applying agile ways of working as part of a highly dynamic and motivated team - driving effective collaboration, solution design and successful engagement with core business customers.

Skills and Experience:

To be a success in this role, you will have relevant experience and/or a bachelor’s degree in a technical subject (e.g. Computer Science, Software Engineering, Business Analytics, Data Science), or a numerate subject (e.g. Maths, Physics), as well as the following:

  • Solid programming experience, ideally in Python.
  • Understanding of data structures and principles of SQL/relational databases.
  • Great inter-personal skills, a team player and a self-starter.
  • A strong appetite for continuous learning.

We also understand that there is a no one size fits all when it comes to tools and technologies, so we are looking for candidates who have experience in also some of the following areas that are relevant to our work, but would look at candidates that have a desire to learn more of them:

  • Databases, modelling and data flows: Common relational, non-relational and spatial databases. Workflow and ETL/ELT tools and methods.
  • Cloud: Azure, AWS or GCP. Docker, kubernetes, helm, data lake storage
  • Web application development: Python frameworks (Flask, FastAPI), basic HTML/CSS/JS, frontend frameworks (like Angular)
  • Programming: Linux terminal (e.g. ssh, bash, cron), APIs, developer collaboration (e.g git, jira, confluence)
  • Data Science/AI principles: Principles of machine learning. Model serving.
  • Agile and DevOps: Kanban, scrum, CI/CD, test automation, monitoring and alerting
